Terrelle Pryor's Future After Being Drafted by the Oakland Raiders

Mike WalkuskyJun 7, 2018

There's no way around it; Terrelle Pryor is a freak of nature.

Pryor's 4.36 second 40 yard dash and 6'5", 232-pound frame are exactly why the Oakland Raiders are enamored with him. The prospect of a lightning-fast quarterback with size is likely what Al Davis dreams about at night.

In some eyes, Pryor was taken too early in the NFL Supplemental Draft. The Raiders popped him in the third round, surprising many observers. It is no surprise that the Raiders took Pryor, due to their penchant for drafting players with track speed, but many expected him to be taken in the fourth round at the earliest.

However, Pryor's talent is something that is rarely available in the third round of NFL drafts. Pryor's character can be questioned, but his size and speed speak for themselves. As a result, it is clear that the Raiders made a high-risk, high-reward pick.

Now that the Raiders have their man in Pryor, it is time to figure out what his role will be. Pryor is known for being a very inaccurate quarterback. His footwork is terrible and he often threw the ball while on the run at Ohio State. He would not go through his quarterback progressions and as a result, would tuck the ball and run after making his first read.

This was encouraged at Ohio State due to his superior athleticism, but it will not work as an NFL quarterback. For these reasons, it is widely believed that Pryor may have to switch to tight end or wide receiver in the NFL.

Unsurprisingly, the Raiders announced that Pryor will solely be a quarterback for them. The Raiders hope that head coach Hue Jackson, who was the quarterbacks coach responsible for developing Joe Flacco with the Baltimore Ravens, will be able to teach Pryor how to be an NFL quarterback.

Additionally, the Raiders have an offensive mastermind in Al Saunders to help foster Pryor's development. With all three Raider quarterbacks under contract for just one more season, Pryor may be under center for the Raiders in the near future.

If Pryor is open to learning what it takes to be an NFL quarterback, then he may become very successful due to the natural arm strength that he possesses. However, if he is unable to gain the knowledge necessary to be a quarterback, then he is destined to become a flop in the NFL. Luckily for Pryor, he has his size and speed to fall back on. If he fails as a quarterback, then he will be able to continue his NFL career as a wide receiver and tight end project.
