Terrelle Pryor Picked by Oakland Raiders in Third Round of Supplemental Draft

Ryan AlfieriJun 7, 2018

The drama that surrounded Terrelle Pryor's entry into the NFL is over - for now. The Oakland Raiders, who lack a fourth round selection in the 2012 draft, chose to use a third round pick on the former Buckeye, who will miss the first five games of the 2011 season due to suspension.

Because of his suspension and late entry into training camp, Pryor probably won't make much, if any, impact on the Raiders 2011 season. However, if Pryor can use 2011 as a "redshirt" season to learn Hue Jackson's offense and get accumulated with life in the NFL, he may push the incumbent and uninspiring Jason Campbell for the starting job next season, if all goes well for Pryor.

As a quarterback, Pryor brings a lot of intriguing qualities to the table, most notably his raw athleticism, huge arm, and downfield throwing ability. If you haven't noticed by now, Al David loves quarterbacks with big-time arms. Pryor also does a great job keeping plays alive, and does not always resort to his running ability when things break down, which is a tendency a lot of young, athletic quarterbacks have in common. He does a good job keeping his head downfield and making game-changing plays.

The issue with Pryor, form a scouting perspective, is his accuracy leaves a lot to be desired. Accuracy is not something that is easy to fix - which is why there is so much uncertainty with similar prospects like Jake Locker.

Bottom line, if you watch Pryor's career at Ohio State, scouts may not like his lack of accuracy and the off-field issues may cause for some concern, but it is difficult to ignore the "wow" factor he brings with his athleticism and big-play ability.

As for the Raiders, this looks like a good gamble. They have a serviceable quarterback at the moment, but no one truly believes that Campbell is the kind of quarterback to bring the Raiders back to glory. Pryor is exactly the kind of gifted player AL Davis love to have one his roster. If Pryor doesn't work out, losing out on a third round pick isn't going to destroy your team's future. If Pryor doesn't work out as a quarterback, he is willing to play other positions, such as wide receiver, which is a position the Raiders could use a little help in.

Either way, the Raiders are hoping this talented, big-armed quarterback is going to help this team more than the last talented, big-armed quarterback they drafted.
