Chiefs vs. Ravens: 10 Kansas City Players To Watch in the NFL Preseason Matchup
The Kansas City Chiefs are looking for their first win of the '11 preseason when they take on the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium tomorrow night.
This game features the two teams that played in one of the AFC Wild Card Round matchups last year in Kansas City, with the Ravens coming out on top by the score of 30-7.
For the Chiefs, this game means much more than just getting another shot at a very talented Ravens team.
It's also a time for the KC coaching stuff to evaluate their current players and see what they have to work with going forward.
Here are 10 Chiefs to watch for in tomorrow's preseason tilt with Baltimore.
QB Tyler Palko
1 of 10Journeyman QB Tyler Palko struggled in his first preseason game of 2011 last Friday.
He threw for just 32 yards on 4-of-8 passing, including many errant throws on the night.
He was also sacked three times in the losing effort.
Palko can't afford to have another dismal effort against the Ravens tomorrow if he wants any chance of being Matt Cassel's backup this season.
DE Allen Bailey
2 of 10Chiefs rookie defensive end Allen Bailey had an up-and-down day in his pro debut against the Bucs last week.
He was able to register a sack, but also was pancaked a few times and looked a little slow on those plays as well.
It's still unclear if KC is going to keep Bailey at his regular defensive end position this season, or move him over to play some OLB as well.
Keep an eye on him to see where he plays and how well he competes against a decent Baltimore offensive line on Friday night.
WR Chandler Williams
3 of 10Fifth-year wideout Chandler Williams had a rough night last Friday against Tamba Bay.
On one punt return, he let the ball bounce by him and was tackled for a two-yard loss on the play.
Considering the fact that he has yet to get farther than an NFL practice squad, he has to be on thin ice with the Chiefs coaching staff right now.
Look for him to step elevate his level of play if he gets some chances in the return game.
FB Le'Ron McClain
4 of 10Ex-Ravens fullback Le'Ron McClain will get his first shot at sticking it to his old team tomorrow night.
You can bet that McClain will be one of the most fired-up Chiefs when the team takes on the Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.
It will be interesting to see how he does against his former team, even if he only plays for the first quarter.
After all, he was one of the best fullbacks in football, and many Chiefs fans want to see him play for the first time in red and gold.
QB Matt Cassel
5 of 10The Chiefs decided to conserve starting QB Matt Cassel in their first preseason game, limiting the Pro Bowler to just a few snaps and zero passes thrown on the night.
This week's game against the Ravens should see Cassel getting some more playing time, and should be interesting to watch for a few reasons.
First of all, to see how much progression Cassel has made since his 2010 breakout season when he had 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
And it will also be nice to see a QB that takes control of the offense, which was something that was lacking in KC's game against the Bucs last Friday.
WR Josue Paul
6 of 10The former Central Connecticut State star has a very slim chance to make the roster.
However, he has played very well in first NFL training camp up this point.
Paul didn't do anything against the Bucs last week, and that hurt the rookie receiver by not getting any reps in live game.
I expect him to be mixed into a few plays tomorrow night, and he is definitely some one that you have to watch out for when he is in the game on offense.
WR Keary Colbert
7 of 10The former Panthers receiver was just signed last week by the Chiefs, mere days before their first preseason game of 2011.
Colbert has been out of the league since 2008, when he played for the Detroit Lions for that season.
He is likely nothing more than camp fodder at this point, but he appears to be determined to make a legitimate NFL comeback after serving as a graduate assistant for USC last season.
All eyes will be on Colbert when he makes his Chiefs debut tomorrow against the Ravens.
CB Quinten Lawrence
8 of 10The receiver-turned-cornerback put in a solid game against the Bucs last week.
Although he did give up a few decent gains through the air, he didn't seem to get lost in coverage too much and played his position well for the most part.
Lawrence will be tested more this week against a solid offense than includes Pro Bowl wideout Anquan Boldin.
If he doesn't play well, he could be that much closer to being out of work in the next few weeks.
K Todd Carter
9 of 10The Chiefs picked up second-year kicker Todd Carter the same day that they signed veteran receiver Keary Colbert.
Many fans were puzzled as to why Carter was brought in, since KC already has a solid kicker in third-year man Ryan Succop.
Carter's specialty appears to be his long kickoffs, which is an area where he should have an advantage over Succop.
Tomorrow night's game should give KC a good idea if they want to keep Carter to do kickoffs for them this season.
ILB Micah Johnson
10 of 10The former Kentucky star has been raising some eyebrows this year at Chiefs training camp.
In his first preseason action of the year, Johnson made a huge play where he shot up the middle and drilled the opposing RB last week against Tampa Bay.
He is likely to see more playing time tomorrow, considering how well he played last week for the team.
Johnson is a sleeper to make the 53-man roster in September, and he is definitely a Chief to watch for in Week 2 of the preseason.
