Alex Rodriguez Shows Good Judgement in Jim Thome Comments

Jim Thome's 600th career home run hasn't exactly gotten the attention it deserves.  Despite that, Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez hasn't overlooked this great accomplishment.  For once, A-Rod is showing good judgement.

In a statement released yesterday, Rodriguez praised one of the great home run hitters of this era.

"Jim is one of the easiest players of our generation to root for.  It's hard to overshadow 600 home runs, because it is a tremendous accomplishment and an exclamation point on a career bound for the Hall of Fame.  But to me, the way he has treated the game, and the people in and around it, will always be the first thing that I think of when I think of Jim Thome.  In so many ways, he is a legend of our game."

First of all, A-Rod would know what it is to overshadow career milestones with on and off the field problems.  I have to say I'm a little surprised at A-Rod's amount of respect for Thome's accomplishment.  Don't get me wrong, he's 100% right in everything he said, but his constant lack of good judgement makes it a surprise that Rodriguez would say the right things about Thome. 

Kudos to A-Rod on that one.  Yankees fans will hope A-Rod continues to make better judgements like this one and stop being such a negative distraction for the Bombers.

As for Thome, I want to extend my own congratulations on his 600th home run.  Thome is one of the true "good guys" in the MLB, keeping his nose clean throughout his career.  He should be appreciated more than he is, considering he was never pegged as one of the dreaded steroid users in the past few years.  He is a first ballot Hall of Fame player in my book and I would hope that the baseball writers will follow suit.
