Green Bay Packers: 6 Suprises We Will See in Preseason Week 2
The Green Bay Packers welcome the Arizona Cardinals to Lambeau Field for the Packers' first preseason home game.
After an uninspired performance against the Cleveland Browns, Green Bay has plenty to work on before the regular season begins. Both their offense and defense struggled and looked very unprepared at times.
We shouldn't expect to see every problem solved during this game, but here are six surprises we will see as Mike McCarthy and Green Bay get ready for the first regular season game.
Graham Harrell Will Come in for Aaron Rodgers, Not Matt Flynn
1 of 6Both Aaron Rodgers and Matt Flynn played well during the game against Cleveland. Unfortunately, third string quarterback Graham Harrell looked very poor.
With Matt Flynn being talked about as possible trade bait, Green Bay needs Harrell to be ready to replace Rodgers should he get injured. Since he won't be playing much during the regular season, watch for the Packers to play Harrell as much as possible during the preseason.
James Starks Gets 10-Plus Carries While Ryan Grant Gets Less Than 5
2 of 6James Starks only carried the ball twice against the Browns, but that number should increase greatly during this second game.
It appears as if Starks isn't ready to give up the the starting position to Grant and Green Bay should give him the majority of the snaps with the first team against Arizona. If he plays well, he may very well win the starting position.
More Designed Plays for Randall Cobb
3 of 6As one of the most impressive players in the Packers' first preseason games, Randall Cobb is looking like a fantastic draft pick for Green Bay.
We really only saw Cobb returning kicks and playing receiver in the slot, but he was impressive in both aspects. His athletic ability will allow him to be used in numerous different ways as the season goes on.
Don't be surprised to see Cobb line up in the backfield and run some reverses this week.
Green Bay Will Be More Aggressive on Defense
4 of 6Last year, the Packers had one of the most intimidating defenses in the NFL. They played with great aggression and were able to put consistent pressure on the quarterback.
After losing Cullen Jenkins to free agency, some wondered how it would affect Green Bay's defense. Against Cleveland, they only recorded one sack and didn't put much pressure on the Browns quarterbacks.
Against the Cardinals and new quarterback Kevin Kolb, Dom Capers should come out swinging. I fully expect plenty of creative blitzes from Capers in order to get after Kolb.
Ricky Elmore Will See Plenty of Playing Time
5 of 6One of the biggest question marks heading into this season was who would play opposite Clay Matthews at outside linebacker. Both Erik Walden and Frank Zombo had decent seasons last year, but neither played well enough to lock up the starting position.
Walden and Zombo really struggled in the first preseason game, which only caused more unrest. Green Bay didn't spend a high draft pick on an outside linebacker, but they did pick up a sleeper candidate in Ricky Elmore. He had a great career at the University of Arizona and really excelled at putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
If Walden and Zombo struggle again, Elmore could see a good amount of playing time and given a chance to move up the depth chart.
The Packers Will Kickoff from the 30-Yard Line
6 of 6Last week, the Chicago Bears protested the new kickoff rule by kicking from the 30-yard line twice.
With the playmaking ability of Randall Cobb, Green Bay would benefit from the opportunity to return kicks instead of simply taking a touchback off every kick.
I see them looking to make a statement, much like the Bears, and kicking from the 30-yard line after any field goal or touchdown.
