NFL Trade Rumors: Arizona Cardinals Staying Put at Wide Receiver—for Now

Chris GreenJun 7, 2018

The Cardinals' quest to secure a No. 2 receiver to complement Larry Fitzgerald is likely on hiatus, possibly indefinitely.

First, they attempted to get Braylon Edwards, who would have been a great fit—assuming that he behaved himself, and there was a good chance of that in Arizona.

By and large, the Cardinals players don’t get into much trouble. And being surrounded by teammates who do the right thing often motivates a player to rise to that level.

There are no stories about them causing trouble at night clubs in Scottsdale or having issues with law enforcement.

The biggest story to come from the Cardinal police files was Darnell Dockett tweeting while being pulled over earlier this summer.

In any case, Edwards signed with the 49ers for reportedly less money.

His desire to be the No. 1 receiver and be in the spotlight was too much to overcome. Hopefully that won’t clash with Michael Crabtree’s desire to be a No. 1 receiver and be in the spotlight.

Then reports surfaced about the possibility of bringing in another malcontent, diva receiver.

Some believed that Randy Moss would be the perfect fit in Arizona. Fitzgerald was a ball boy for the Vikings when Moss played there, after all!

Randy Moss would have been a terrible fit for the Cardinals.

Moss’s troubles do not reside with the law. Randy Moss’s troubles lie within Randy Moss. His play becomes lackadaisical when the balls are not thrown his way or when the team is struggling.

Would he really be able to take a back seat to someone who was a ball boy for a team he used to play for?

All that needs to be said is that a player with his talent played on three different teams last season, including a team with one of the best coaches and best quarterbacks in the NFL, and he was unsuccessful at all three stops.

To think that things would be different with the Cardinals is borderline arrogant.

Last week, when the Bills placed Lee Evans on the trading block, it appeared that the Cardinals would have yet another opportunity to get a complementary piece for the offense and a big-play receiver who can stretch the field.

As it happened, the asking price was too high, with the Ravens giving up a fourth-round draft pick.

With the Cardinals already sacrificing their second-round pick for Kevin Kolb, they opted to pass.

While the receiving group appears to be in place, if the Cardinals truly want to set their offense up for success, they should continue to pursue a No. 2 receiver, if one who is truly an upgrade should become available and the price is right.

At this point, the Cardinals' best option is to move forward with the players they have now and hope that either Andre Roberts or Early Doucet can continue to develop and fill that roll.
