WWE Monday Night Raw August 15, 2011 Results: The Top 5 Moments of the Night
Tonight's WWE Monday Night Raw left us with more questions than answers regarding the SummerSlam fallout, but what we did learn was that the WWE is positioning their biggest starts for some high-profile feuds—specifically, CM Punk and John Cena.
Also, Rey Mysterio challenged Alberto Del Rio for the WWE Championship—Mysterio getting his title shot rematch due to losing the WWE Championship to John Cena earlier this month.
Quick Results:
John Morrison def. R-Truth via pinfall
Kelly Kelly & Eve Torres def. The Bella Twins via pinfall
Jack Swagger def. Alex Riley via pinfall
Kofi Kingston & Evan Bourne def. David Otunga & Michael McGillicutty via pinfall
Alberto Del Rio def. Rey Mysterio via pinfall
There is plenty to talk about after tonight's Raw, but will the top moment come by one of the matches listed above?
Check out the following slides and see how my top five moments of the night stack up to your own!
J.R. and Jerry Lawler Highlight the Lack of Charisma in the Tag Team Division
1 of 5Like most fans, I was none too thrilled with WWE Tag Team Champions David Otunga and Michael McGillicutty taking air time away from some of the more interesting talent on the Raw roster. That said, something has to be done with this team, considering how they're holding the Tag Team Championship for now.
The good news is, judging by commentators Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler's comments tonight, those belts may not be theirs much longer.
As the Tag Team Champions took on two of the most exciting high flying Superstars in the WWE, Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne, the announce booth was burying the champions.
J.R. referred to Otunga and McGillicutty as bland and spoke highly of Kingston and Bourne.
With the champions clutching their titles and running away after being defeated by Kingston and Bourne in this non-title match, the booth suggested making the same match a title bout.
Will the champions hang on to their titles all the way until WWE Night of Champions, or will they drop them sooner?
The Miz (and Crowd) Rip Subway During Product Placement
2 of 5I'm not much of a fan when it comes to product placement, especially in the middle of a two-hour episode of WWE Monday Night Raw.
With that said, The Miz's segment where he claimed he could be a better salesman for Subway than Jared himself was one of the more memorable moments in what felt like a rather uneventful Raw.
The Miz entered wearing a suit, and he called out Jared on the mic, who just happened to be holding an oven roasted chicken sandwich from Subway!
The Miz took the sandwich, cut a promo for it, entered the ring and took a bite.
Nothing special, right? Right, but the crowd chanting "Subway sucks," is.
Dolph Ziggler and Vicki Guerrero Squabble in the Announce Booth
3 of 5During the Swagger/Riley match, WWE United States Champion Dolph Ziggler and his manager Vicki Guerrero joined the commentary booth. Although it was a shame that Swagger and Riley didn't get nearly any focus, it didn't make the banter in the booth any less entertaining.
Last week, the rift between Dolph and Vicki began after Dolph lost to Riley, thanks to Vicki. Now, it seems that the two still haven't managed to patch things up, much to the chagrin of Jerry Lawler.
Lawler asked how Dolph can kiss Vicki with breath as bad as her's, but Vicki stepped in to say Dolph doesn't kiss her at all. Dolph mentioned that he DID kiss her hand last week. Lawler then asked if her hand smelled as bad as her breath.
That was just one of many humorous moments during the match.
Vicki went on to help Swagger defeat Riley by distracting the referee with Jim Ross' cowboy hat, and then applauded Swagger on the win. Backstage afterwards, Swagger suggested to Vicki that she "expand her clientele," hinting at a Swagger/Vicki relationship starting up soon.
Alberto Del Rio vs. Rey Mysterio and the aftermath with John Cena
4 of 5The final match of the night was an exciting one, with Rey Mysterio proving to be a worthy challenger to Alberto Del Rio's Unified WWE Championship. Rey's hometown crowd was behind him 100 percent, without a doubt.
With victory just within reach for Mysterio, hitting the 619, and climbing the top rope to finish off the champion, Del Rio's last-minute counter allowed for him to secure the three count and retain his WWE Championship.
That wasn't enough for Del Rio though, and he looked to break Mysterio's arm with the Cross Armbreaker. Just as it looked as if the hometown hero would leave with a broken arm, John Cena rushed to the ring and made the save.
Del Rio made a quick escape but not before Cena gave him an earful, and it was definitely an earful. Cena claimed that Del Rio tarnished the Undisputed WWE Championship by taking it from CM Punk the way he did, and now, wasn't a champion, but a target.
Cena finished by saying that Del Rio's destiny is John Cena kicking his ass, and I believe every word of it.
CM Punk Confronts Kevin Nash
5 of 5Easily the best segment of the night, Kevin Nash was explaining his actions at SummerSlam, and former Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk stepped out to give Nash a piece of his mind.
Nash claimed that he was at SummerSlam as a fan and received a text message from Triple H saying that he needed to "stick" whoever won the title. CM Punk said that neither Triple H nor Nash knew what was good for business, and laying hands on CM Punk is NEVER good for business.
The two traded jab after jab; Punk bringing up terrible gimmicks from Nash's past, and Nash retaliating by telling Punk to take a shower, hit the weights and get a clue. When Punk insisted that Nash didn't know what was good for business in 2011, Nash cited how he and Scott Hall changed professional wrestling in 1996, and Punk has them to thank for that.
Eventually, Punk grew frustrated and headed to the ring to fight Nash, but WWE security blocked his path. Punk then went to find Triple H backstage.
Punk had his meeting with Triple H behind closed doors, and John Laurinaitis approached Nash as he went to find Triple H as well. Laurinaitis left with Nash to speak privately, and Stephanie McMahon Helmsley took a few shots at CM Punk later in the show as well, when they ran into one another.
This left us with more questions than answer, but the questions that mattered most were answered, and the new questions are just as appealing as the last.
Was this your top moment of the night?
