SummerSlam 2011: How the Ending of the WWE Title Match Is Great for the WWE

Don DiabloJun 7, 2018

Last night at the SummerSlam pay-per-view, the WWE continued its shock and awe campaign that started with CM Punk's astonishing shoot a month and a half ago.  In another weird twist, Kevin Nash returned to the WWE and laid out CM Punk, after uniting the two WWE titles against John Cena, allowing Alberto Del Rio to fulfill his destiny and win the WWE Title in Los Angeles.

It is funny how I see some wrestling fans complain about the WWE putting the title on Del Rio because in some eyes it is destroying the Second City Saint's momentum.  Some also believe that CM Punk and John Cena's rivalry is over.  In the word's of Lee Corso, 'Not so fast, my friend.'

With Triple H already entangled in the feud between Cena and Punk, we can now add Del Rio and Kevin Nash.  The growth of a feud that started over just the WWE title and the idea of the what the WWE stands for has grown to a whole different level.  It is quickly turning into a battle of those with power and those without.  It's staying fresh by adding new dimensions to the fold but the core of how this feud began is still intact.

As wrestling fans, we cannot stand when story lines are left unfinished or undeveloped.  But some complain that the WWE has dropped the ball on the best story line to come in years by having Alberto Del Rio cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase against CM Punk.

Again, that is not the case.  The feud between CM Punk and John Cena can continue even without the WWE title being in the conversation because of what each superstar currently stands for.  John Cena represents the powers that be in the WWE.  He has a lot of backstage control and is in CM Punk's words 'The New York Yankees.'  He's the guy that you either love or hate.  Cena also is the prototypical WWE wrestler in his looks and in-ring style.  CM Punk is the Voice of the Voiceless.  He is shown as the leader of those without power.  He also is not what you would consider the prototypical WWE superstar.  These two superstars stand for ideas that contradict each other.

WWE creative has also set up numerous possibilities as to which way this story line can continue.  Alberto Del Rio really was not doing anything since the feud against Edge was abruptly ended with Edge's retirement.  Kevin Nash has said numerous times he wanted to do something more than just sit around his house.  Not to mention, he is friends with Triple H.  The WWE now brings a rising star in Del Rio to the forefront just like they did last year with the Miz.  They are in a backwards way starting to build their younger superstars by surrounding them with legends of the past.

This is the type of story line that WWE creative team should have been doing for quite some time.  WWE is a male soap opera.  There is no doubt in that.  It is supposed to have odd twists and turns and leave the audience wanting more.  At least at the main event level, the WWE is not the same boring garbage night in, night out.

Now how is this all great for the WWE?  Simple, it shows that we are the best of the best and even our top stars can improve.  We can without a doubt say that John Cena versus CM Punk at Money in the Bank will be one of the Matches of the Year.  I cannot remember the last time that was said about a Cena match.  John Cena has shown that he can wrestle and do a good job at it.  CM Punk continues to show that he is the best of the best in the ring and on the mic. Triple H is starting to come into his own as the power within the company.  Alberto Del Rio finally fulfilled his destiny in winning the WWE title.  And we have the return of Kevin Nash.

This story line now involves three legendary superstars, the hottest commodity in the wrestling industry and a rising superstar.  And we, as writers and fans, are all talking about it.  That is what the WWE wants and why it is great for them.
