WWE SummerSlam Results: Top 5 Contenders for Kelly Kelly's Divas Title
Champion Kelly Kelly put up one heck of a fight at WWE's Summerslam PPV against her challenger, the vicious Beth Phoenix, and managed to bravely withstand a brutal beating to walk out with her women's title after shockingly reversing the GlamSlam into a roll-up.
It was an impressive and gutsy in-ring performance from Kelly, who had heard complaints from fans and critics about her inability to carry the title or the division, following a few bad matches. So, after what is likely the the best match of her career, what is next for Kelly and her title? Let's have a look...
Beth Phoenix
1 of 5Well, this one is incredibly obvious. Beth has been reinvigorated since her heel turn and savage beatdown of Kelly after winning the Divas Battle Royale on Raw a few weeks ago.
Armed with a new attitude, she and good friend Natalya have formed a tag team and are apparently on a mission to rid their company of the professional models they feel plague the division and make all women wrestlers look bad.
Impressively, Beth carried the inconsistent Kelly to her best match to date at the Summerslam 2011 PPV and, while she fell short of that occasion, this surely is not the end of the title aspirations. Indeed, following Beth's tantrum after that match, it seems clear she and Kelly have unfinished business. Which may get settled at the next WWE pay-per-view, Night of Champions, in September.
Eve
2 of 5This one may seem unlikely due to the fact that Eve is an established babyface who has been closely linked with Kelly in the storylines (Kelly saved Eve from a beatdown by Beth Phoenix last week, and Eve came out with Kelly for her match at Summerslam against 'The Glamazon'.)
However, the ambitious Eve could still be gunning for that title.
It's also worth pointing out that Eve, while not on the level of Beth or Natalya, is a vastly superior wrestler to Kelly and has a far better grasp of the basics. If WWE wish to pursue the Wrestlers vs. Models angle on Smackdown on Raw they may come to the conclusion that Eve is a far better babyface to lead the charge than the inexperienced Kelly, hence a title change.
Natalya
3 of 5Granted, Natalya is on a different brand from Kelly but, really, when has that mattered? WWE pay little or no attention to the brand split these days (Raw stars go over to Smackdown, and vice-versa, and no one bothers about it, tries to enforce the brand split, or even raises the issue.)
And considering that Natalya's new BFF, Beth Phoenix, is heavily involved in a feud with Kelly right now, it seems guaranteed that Nattie will be involved in the title hunt in some manner or other (Nattie also cornered Beth at the Summerslam PPV for her title match with Kelly).
Will she go for Kelly's title herself, though? I'd say it seems likely. Natalya's a force to be reckoned with in WWE and it seems extremely unlikely she will be content to be simply Beth's sidekick. If that is truly the case, the Beth/Natalya alliance could be short lived.
Maryse
4 of 5After a promising start, Maryse's WWE career has been in a slump in recent times. It's almost like the achingly bland Ted DiBiase managed to suck the charisma out of her and make her just as irrelevant as he is.
Stuck on a show no one cares about, she's made only a few scant appearances on Raw in the last few months. More worryingly, she's faced legal problems, stemming from a crazed middle-aged fan who has bombarded her with terrifying text and voice messages (no, guys, this is not the way to get a date with a diva.)
Thankfully, she managed to get a restraining order against the fan and must be looking forward to putting this awful business behind her. But where does her career go from here?
Maybe a title run would be the perfect way to rebound? While not nearly the worker Beth or Natalya is, she's still extremely good at playing the arrogant, bitchy heel and a program against Kelly isn't entirely out of the question at this point.
Alicia Fox
5 of 5Currently keeping a low profile on Smackdown, Fox showed flashes of potential as a bitchy heel during her pushes in Raw's women's division in 2009 and 2010.
But despite turning into a fairly decent performer, Alicia's push was later dropped for reasons no one is quite sure of. And after she was sent to the Smackdown brand in April, she was left to languish on Superstars and feud with Tamina, where she currently portrays a rather lukewarm and bland babyface character.
Desperately needing the chance to reinvent herself, we reckon Alicia Fox could greatly benefit from a few trips back to her old home Raw for some title matches with Kelly. And she could maybe even bring in her sister, Tough Enough and FCW's Christina Crawford, for some back up.
