WWE SummerSlam Results: 8 Reasons CM Punk Still Deserves to Be the Champ

David LevinJun 5, 2018

He beat John Cena. He did exactly what he said he would do. And in the end, it was CM Punk, the man who is as honest as the day is long, who got screwed by the WWE establishment.

So what happens next? Does he get the shot at the title he deserves? Does Cena get the shot? What about the others?

There is the political game of wrestling (yes, there is one) where wrestlers jockey for position. Maybe not as much as they did in the 1970s and 1980s, but there is still some political stroke.

John Cena used to have the most stroke in the company (some would argue it was Randy Orton), but CM Punk made people stand up and take notice.

Now, Punk is a player in the game and not the leader. So where does that put him and the other wrestlers who looked like they deserved a shot at the prize?

It Puts John Cena's Status in Limbo as Well

While Cena is still a major player, he would appear to be third in line.

Del Rio is champion. Punk is first to get a title shot (or that is how it is supposed to be. But then again, this is the WWE and anything can happen).

Does this mean Cena must go through the ranks again to claim a title shot? And what happens after Punk cries foul?

He Never Lost to Del Rio in a Match

2 of 8

Del Rio lost to CM Punk in a match last week that Triple H made on Raw.

You got the feeling that Del Rio would have some hand in the SummerSlam event, but did not know in what capacity.

Like I said in my story from yesterday, Punk won the battle, but right now, Del Rio is winning the war.

On Sunday night, Kevin Nash beat Punk. Del Rio just took out the trash.

Because with the Title, Punk Has the Power to Control What Happens on RAW

Punk's popularity is based on what he wanted to accomplish and what he set out to do.

So far, he has backed up his words with actions. Without a title, he does not get the mic opportunities or said opportunities.

Triple H, and maybe Stephanie, will control what happens with matches, opponents, etc.

It takes away Punk's leverage.

Fans Respond Well to the Anti-Hero

4 of 8

As the "Steve Austin" of the WWE right now, and I am not saying they are on par with one another. Fans, especially men, relate to Punk. Women may respond to Del Rio with his looks and suave demeanor. But when it comes to younger crowds, you have to think Punk gets the edge.

If Triple H is moving away from the "PG" persona of the WWE and more toward "Attitude," wouldn't Punk as champion make sense?

Punk is definitely more of a "badass rebel." Del Rio is Rick Martel of the 80s.

We Have Already Seen Del Rio and Rey Mysterio Feud

5 of 8

Alberto Del Rio faces Mysterio tonight.

I don't see him losing to Mysterio any time soon. And Punk vs. Del Rio makes more sense in light of what happened Sunday night.

Mysterio deserves a chance to be champion with all that happened to him in the past few weeks.

I'd be surprised if Mysterio can take the belt off Del Rio. But I know Punk can take the belt off the champion.

We love Rey and his charisma and his fan appeal. But the two are not as compelling as a feud with Punk.

We Want to See Triple H Wrestle Punk for the Title

Punk and Triple H makes for great drama.

The COO wants his belt, and what better way than to fight the man who criticized his father-in-law, spoke poorly of new boss and of course picked on him for doing what his wife wants.

We as fans want it, and like Triple H has said in the past about other things that were done, "It's good for business."

It Takes Away from a Punk/Cena Angle

7 of 8

Everything for over a month fed off this feud, and the momentum was the driving force in getting fans back to the matches.

Fans booed Cena while cheering for Punk, and the split was about 50-50.

How can you argue with success?

Cena likes working with Punk. There is chemistry. Will Cena be able to find that chemistry again?

Can Punk bring Del Rio to his level?

Punk Is a More Credible Champion

8 of 8

Punk has the stroke, while Del Rio thinks he has the stroke.

If Nash was a plant (remember this is wrestling) and Triple H was not involved, then the power of the COO makes a rematch.

But Punk gives the title credibility, and his persona breeds heel in this case against Cena.

Against Del Rio, he exudes hero.

In the case of the WWE, you would rather have him the popular heel, if that makes sense.
