WWE Summerslam Results: What's Next for Alberto Del Rio After Winning WWE Title

Adam ReiterJun 7, 2018

After three unsuccessful tries, Alberto Del Rio finally cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase Sunday night at SummerSlam, marking his first World Championship win, nearly one year to the day of his WWE debut, August 20, 2010.

With Del Rio the top dog on the top show, what's next for "The Mexican JBL?"

Here are some possibilities:

John Cena and CM Punk—I've noticed that once a year, the WWE likes to recycle old storylines after several years: In 2008, it was Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho, which was first seen in 2003; In 2009, it was JBL and John Cena, which was first seen during 2005; and In 2010, it was Kane and The Undertaker, which was seen in 1998 and 2004.

This wouldn't be the same in the people, as it would the concept first seen with Cena, Edge and Triple H leading up to Backlash 2006: A series of handicap matches between the three men, leading to a triple threat match at Night of Champions. Punk and Cena are hot commodities, and both have a rematch clause to use, and if the WWE is smart, this would make for a very interesting storyline.

Rey Mysterio—Sticking with the recycling storyline concept, Mysterio would make for a wonderful program with Del Rio. Mysterio, along with Kofi Kingston and John Morrison, beat Del Rio in a six-man tag match early on Sunday night, before Del Rio even won the WWE title. Mysterio can use this and hold it over Del Rio's head as Night of Champions draws near.

While chances are that neither of these programs will come about, the fans can always hope.
