UFC on Versus 5 Results: 4 Fights Jim Miller Must Take to Get Back on Track

Tim McTiernanAug 14, 2011

Well, the way I look at Sunday night, the Jim Miller hype train was robbed by Ben "Smooth" Henderson.

Miller came into this fight looking for a victory, and with it, a title shot against the winner of Frankie Edgar-Gray Maynard.

Unfortunately, he was pretty effectively mauled by Benderson.

Miller has now only lost three times in his career—to Henderson, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.

If Miller wants to get back in contention, he is going to have to take a fight to get back on track. Here are a few opponents he could face.

Sean Sherk

1 of 5

Sean Sherk is a fighter that makes sense for almost every lightweight.

Sherk is a former champion, and although he has fought infrequently of late, he has become a de facto gatekeeper.

His past two fights have been a unanimous decision loss to Frankie Edgar (while Edgar was still climbing the ladder) and a split-decision victory over prospect Evan Dunham.

For Miller, a fight with Sherk would be good to gauge where he exactly sits in the division.

Loser of Guillard/ Lauzon

2 of 5

Melvin Guillard and Joe Lauzon will be facing off at UFC 136, with some serious title implications on the line.

The winner would move one step closer to a title shot, and the loser would also be looking for a fight to build back up.

Miller is clearly in the same position as the loser of this fight, and if this were to happen, the lightweight picture would get much clearer.

Loser of Siver/ Stout

3 of 5

Yet another fight with serious title implications, Dennis Siver takes on Sam Stout at UFC 137.

The winner would be above Jim Miller on the title ladder, and the loser would be another case of looking to get back on track.

Both of these guys are strikers, so they would have to work some serious takedown defense if they want to take on Miller.

Winner of Pettis/Stephens

4 of 5

This fight pits Anthony Pettis, coming off a loss, against Jeremy Stephens, who is on a two-fight win streak.

A fight against either of these two would be great for getting Miller back on track—should he win of course.

No fight on this list would be an easy fight, but all of them are definitely winnable for Miller.

As a fellow New Jersian, here's hoping Miller gets back on track soon.
