UFC on Versus 5 Results: Fight Card Stacked with Upsets

Todd SeylerJun 7, 2018

What an absolutely amazing night of fights. UFC Live on Versus 5 did not disappoint with the tremendous matchups. Nor did the fighters disappoint in their performances leaving the fans at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the millions viewing on Versus worldwide, wanting more action.

Highlighting the evening's card was the final fight for the welterweight journeyman, Chris "Lights Out" Lytle.

In customary style, this Indianapolis, Indiana native took to the center of the Octagon and delivered an overhand right with bad intentions on "The Outlaw" Dan Hardy within seconds of the opening bell.

This mixed martial arts contest became more of a quintessential boxing matchup as both welterweight competitors battered each other through three grueling rounds.

As the back-and-forth affair was coming to a close in Round 3, Lytle capitalized on a mistake by Hardy and sunk in a deep guillotine choke securing a submission victory in his last UFC fight.

Lytle's performance was not to be undone, as five other mixed martial artists secured upset victories in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A truly epic night of fights. Please follow along as I recap the biggest upsets from UFC Live on Versus 5.

Thank you again Chris Lytle for all that you have provided us inside the Octagon and everything you have done as a role model and ambassador for the UFC outside of the cage. Your legacy will not be forgotten.

I welcome your comments.

Upset No. 1: Ben Henderson Dismantling Jim Miller

1 of 5

Ben "Smooth" Henderson catapulted into the UFC lightweight championship picture with a clear-cut statement Sunday evening.

Allowing his fight performance to speak volumes for the typically humble Henderson, "Smooth" was sure to announce to the UFC fans and its brass that he was not a stepping stone and is a viable threat for the title.

Picking apart the 20-2 Miller in the stand-up department with straight punches and thigh-bruising roundhouse kicks, Henderson out-struck the presumed No. 1 contender on their feet.

The ground game was no different for the former WEC lightweight champion. Defending all of Miller's submission attempts, Henderson continued to assault the New Jersey native on the mat with skull-crushing elbow strikes and thunderous punches from various positions.

Miller was a minus-160 favorite in the eyes of the Vegas bookies. Henderson set aside the experts' predictions as he dismantled Miller in all facets of the matchup.

Securing a unanimous decision victory with a dominating win over Jim Miller, the UFC lightweight picture is much more clouded with Henderson's victory.

Upset No. 2: Donald Cerrone Blitzes Through Charles Oliveira

2 of 5

Not to be out-performed by his former WEC brethren in Henderson, Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone put on an absolutely remarkable Muay Thai clinic against the young prospect, Charles "do Bronx" Oliveira.

Cerrone, like Henderson, has not received his due credit since arriving in the UFC. Brushing off the nay-sayers, "Cowboy's" customary relaxed demeanor in the stand-up striking payed tremendous dividends for the Jackson Submission Fighting pupil.

Picking apart Oliveira with straight punches, Cerrone mixed in excellent leg kicks and a multitude of various angles and planes to dominate "do Bronx" on their feet.

The fight came to an end after "Cowboy" crippled Oliveira with a body shot which sent the 21-year-old Brazilian into the dorsal position, feebly attempting a last-ditch leg lock on Cerrone.

Capitalizing on the debilitating body punch, Cerrone finished "do Bronx" with a swarm of unanswered punches. Referee stoppage came at 3:01 of the very first round.

Including Ben Henderson's victory, Cerrone's dominance should catapult this MMA veteran into the top 10 of the UFC lightweight division as well.

This amazingly talented 155-pound class is getting deeper with each subsequent pay-per-view.

Upset No. 3: Duane Ludwig Out-Strikes Amir Sadollah

3 of 5

Duane "Bang" Ludwig was an enormous underdog to the rising star Amir Sadollah on Sunday evening. Based on Sadollah's last performance inside the Octagon, it may be fitting that he was a minus-325 favorite to defeat the Muay Thai specialist on Sunday.

Ludwig, an accomplished Muay Thai practitioner, and a seasoned veteran inside the Octagon, had tremendous motivation to defeat Sadollah.

Not only earning a victory in the win column, "Bang" was recovering from an ankle injury in 2010 and needed to prove that he was a worthy opponent within the welterweight division.

Both fighters possess excellent stand-up skills. However, Ludwig's Muay Thai is world-class and his counter-striking and ability to work various boxing angles was too much for Sadollah to overcome.

"Bang" landed a multitude of punches, kicks, knees and elbows during the opening round which set the stage for Sadollah's evening.

Earning a unanimous decision victory, this almost 3-to-1 underdog earned his paycheck as he tactically dissected Sadollah and showed the world that Duane Ludwig is a force within the UFC welterweight division.

Upset No. 4: Jared Hamman Pounds Down C.B. Dollaway

4 of 5

Making his middleweight debut inside the Octagon at the Bradley Center, Jared "The Messenger" Hamman was a 5-2 underdog against the former Ultimate Fighter Season 7 runner-up, C.B. "The Doberman" Dollaway.

Hamman, known for his aggressive nature inside the Octagon, possesses excellent striking skills, yet has been exposed in his limited ground game in the past.

Dollaway, a well-accomplished grappler at Arizona State University, took advantage of Hamman's limited take-down defense and secured a multitude of take-downs in this matchup.

Establishing the fight back to their feet, "The Messenger" found his mark in Round 2 keeping Dollaway at bay and out of take-down distance with his excellent jab.

Stunning "The Doberman" will a multitude of punches, Hamman followed Dollaway to the mat where he delivered a series of unanswered strikes forcing a referee stoppage at 3:38 of Round 2.

Awarding Jared Hamman the victory with a TKO stoppage in his middleweight debut, "The Messenger" will look to capitalize on his momentum and continue his winning ways inside the Octagon.

Upset No. 5: Ronny Markes Grounds the Hard-Hitting Karlos Vemola

5 of 5

With the betting odds favoring Karlos "The Terminator" Vemola almost 5-2, the hard-hitting Czech was predicted to dismantle Ronny Markes in this light heavyweight matchup.

Earning Knockout of the Night honors in his light heavyweight debut inside the UFC, Vemola's size, strength and aggressive nature were supposed to be too overpowering for Markes.

The Brazilian native had other plans for "The Terminator." Markes capitalized on Vemola's wild punches as he secured take-down after take-down, grinding out a unanimous decision victory.

Vemola had no answers for Markes' grappling ability and the young Brazilian exploited the Czech's inability to defend the take-down, earning a hard-fought win in his UFC debut.
