UFC on Versus 5 Results: 5 Fights Donald Cerrone Should Take Next

Tim McTiernanJun 7, 2018

Boy, was Donald Cerrone (16-3 [1 NC]) impressive or what?

Charles Olivera was being touted as the next big thing in the lightweight division, and Cerrone took care of him in a little over three minutes.

With fellow former WEC lightweight Ben Henderson also winning tonight, it's been proven that the WEC lightweights can hang with the best.

Cerrone is due for a step up in competition, so here are five potential fights for Donald "Luckiest Guy on the Earth Cause he Dated Brittney Palmer" Cerrone.

Jim Miller

1 of 6

Jim Miller (20-3) lost for only the third time in his career on Sunday, when he lost a unanimous decision to Ben Henderson.

Miller was fighting for a title shot in this bout, and he had absolutely no answer for Henderson.

Henderson absolutely manhandled Miller, and it was very impressive.

Miller would definitely be a step up for Cerrone, and a good test to see where he really is in his career.

Sean Sherk

2 of 6

Sean Sherk (36-4-1) has become a bit of a gatekeeper as of late. And by gatekeeper of course I mean guy who occasionally fights and takes on the up and comers.

Sherk's last fight saw him kill some of the hype that Evan Dunham had, and before that he took on the current champ Frankie Edgar (and lost a decision) while Edgar was still climbing the ladder.

Sherk, as a former UFC champion, would also be a step up for Cerrone.

Sherk is looking to return sometime in the fall, so the timing could work out nicely for this bout.

Winner of Guillard/ Lauzon

3 of 6

The rest of Cerrone's potential fights all hinge on the results of other fights, as many of the top lightweights are booked.

The next potential fight would be the winner of the Melvin Guillard-Joe Lauzon matchup.

Guillard is the self described "dark horse" of the division, and is an outstanding striker with one punch knockout power.

Joe Lauzon is a very good grappler, and his jiu-jitsu could negate Cerrone's, and produce a nice standup war between two of the lankiest lightweights.

Winner of Siver/ Stout

4 of 6

This one is a bit of a stretch, but still a possibility.

Dennis Siver is taking on Sam Stout at UFC 137, pitting two great strikers against each other.

Siver is coming off a controversial unanimous decision victory over Matt Wiman at UFC 132, and Stout is coming off a knockout of the year candidate over Yves Edwards at UFC 131.

Siver showed good takedown defense against George Sotiropoulos, and could have a war with Cerrone, and Stout's only loss in his last five fights was a split decision to Jeremy Stephens.

Winner of Stephens/ Pettis

5 of 6

Speak of the devil!

Jeremy Stephens, on a two fight win streak, will be taking on Anthony Pettis, coming off a unanimous decision loss to Clay Guida.

Stephens is 4-1 in his last five, and his lone loss was a split decision to Melvin Guillard at UFC 119.

Stephens has 14 of his 20 wins by (T)KO, and it would be fun to watch him and Cerrone fight.

Pettis would be looking to get back to his winning ways, and a fight against Cerrone could be just what the doctor ordered.

This would be a WEC grudge match, to see where each stands in the UFC.

Cerrone's got lots of options, and he looks good in all of those matchups.
