7 Fighters Who Are Ready to Dethrone Brock Lesnar as the UFC's Biggest Draw

Tim McTiernanAug 15, 2011

Brock Lesnar has had six fights in the UFC. Five of those fights have been in the top 20 UFC PPV's of all time.

Four of those fights have been in the top six, and he also has the top two all time.

Brock Lesnar is the undisputed, P4P King of PPV's. Nobody can deny that.

Unfortunately for Dana White and Co., Brock has been out since last October dealing with the loss of his heavyweight title, and a recurrence of diverticulitis.

Lesnar was set to headline UFC 131 opposite Junior dos Santos, but the diverticulitis forced him to pull out.

UFC 131 ended up pulling in about 300,000 buys, but had Lesnar been headlining against dos Santos instead of Shane Carwin, it is almost guaranteed that it would have been another 1 million-plus PPV for Brock.

Unfortunately, Lesnar won't be around forever, so lets take a look at seven fighters who could overtake Brock Lesnar as the UFC's biggest draw.

Jon Jones

1 of 8

Jon Jones, the UFC's youngest champion in the history of the company, is only 23 years old.

Jones has a pro record of 13-1, including finishes over Mauricio Rua, Ryan Bader, Vladimir Matyushenko and Brandon Vera.

Jones is one of the fastest rising stars in the UFC, and with his exciting and explosive fighting style, he could be the man to bring the UFC to a whole new level, much in the way that Chuck Liddell did.

Jones has headlined one PPV so far in his career, and it pulled in 445,000 buys.

He will headline his second PPV when he defends his title for the first time against Rampage Jackson at UFC 135.

Chael Sonnen

2 of 8

Chael Sonnen (25-11-1) may not seem like he could be the next big thing.

But who out there tuned into his Q&A before UFC 133?

People want to see this guy talk, they want to hear what he has to say, and he evokes a very strong response from the fans.

Many fans (like me) are a huge fan of Sonnen and everything he has to say. Many other fans can't stand Chael and would tune in to see him lose.

Well, it doesn't matter why they tune in, just as long as they do.

You'd have to assume a Silva-Sonnen rematch would draw huge numbers, right?

Chael has headlined one PPV and it pulled in 600,000 buys.

Nick Diaz

3 of 8

Nick Diaz (25-7, 1 NC) takes over right where Chael Sonnen leaves off.

Sonnen will never trash talk in the cage, he does all his work beforehand. Diaz is a bit different.

An interview with Diaz is rare and usually pretty awkward.

Diaz prefers to do all his talking in the cage, as he will frequently be seen taunting his opponents, dropping his hands and sticking out his chin all while in the fight.

Diaz is just another one of those fighters that you love or hate, and is definitely going to pull in big numbers when he takes on GSP at UFC 137.

Diaz will headline his first PPV when he takes on GSP.

Rory MacDonald

4 of 8

Rory MacDonald (12-1) is not ready to become the UFC's biggest draw tomorrow.

He probably won't be ready in a year.

But he has a chance to be the biggest draw sometime in the future.

MacDonald has been described as the next GSP, by GSP himself. If that isn't a massive compliment, then I don't know what is.

MacDonald has five (T)KOs and six submissions in his career, and only one decision victory.

Maybe he'll be GSP pre-Serra...

Carlos Condit

5 of 8

If MacDonald has the chance to be the next big thing, then the guy who beat him has got to be, too!

Carlos Condit (27-5) is a proven finisher.

Condit has 13 (T)KOs and 13 submissions, and only one decision.

So, from that, you can tell that Condit is very well-rounded, has got power in his hands and when there's blood in the water, he swarms.

In his last fight against Dong Hyun Kim, he was taken down early by the judoka, but then, almost immediately, he reversed the position and ended up on top of Kim.

Then a little later in the round, Condit landed a flying knee flush on Kim's jaw and knocked him senseless.

Hopefully MacDonald and Condit will meet again sometime down the road because that would be a helluva rematch.

Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva

6 of 8

Let's face it, neither of these two have been able to do it on their own.

Brock Lesnar has had four PPVs pull in over 1 million buys, and he has four of the top six all time with UFC 100, UFC 116, UFC 121 and UFC 91.

Georges St-Pierre has had one PPV pull in over a million and that was his Champion vs. Champion match against BJ Penn at UFC 94.

Anderson Silva has never had a PPV pull in over a million; his closest was UFC 101, which he didn't even headline. His closest that he headlined was UFC 126, which pulled in 725,000.

If these two ever really do fight, the PPV that they go on could easily eclipse UFC 100's 1.6 million buys. I think they would even have a shot at 2 million.

Conclusion

7 of 8

In the end, there's probably nobody that could overtake Lesnar tomorrow.

Even with Chael Sonnen and Nick Diaz, there is no single fighter who produces as much of a response as Brock Lesnar does.

Fans love to hate him, and some hate to love him. No other fighter out there can have the same said about him.

With time, though, and if the right matchups can happen, Lesnar could one day be dethroned as the P4P King of PPVs.

In the meantime, we can just hope for Lesnar to come back strong from his diverticulitis so that we can see him pummel someone new.
