The Cleveland Browns are taking on the defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers at home tonight. It promises to be a good game and will pit a young and improving team against one that many people believe is the best in the NFL.

Both teams stayed relatively complacent during the offseason and did not see any major players come or go. Consistency might be a good thing for both teams.

The Browns were competitive last season under new president Mike Holmgren and saw players like Colt McCoy and Peyton Hillis emerge, but only managed to win five games.

The Packers won the Super Bowl and are only looking to get better this season. The team barely made it into the playoffs last year, but really came into their own after rolling over the Eagles and Falcons in consecutive weeks. They had a ton of guys on the IR during their title run, so look for them to get even better this season.

Browns Key Addition:

Pat Shurmur: I was hesitant to put Shurmur here over Brandon Jackson, but the Browns running back platoon is just so deep I do not feel he will get enough touches to make an impact. The team already has Hillis and Montario Hardesty in the backfield.

Shurmur will run an offense that is similar to the one he installed in St. Louis for Sam Bradford. Colt McCoy should definitely benefit from this system as a developing QB in this league. He has pressure on him to get the Browns back to the playoffs after an eight-season draught.

Packers Key Addition:

Derek Sharrod: Sharrod was the Packers’ first-round choice in the 2011 NFL draft. He will be starting at left guard tonight, although he has struggled mightily at that position in training camp. Sharrod is a natural tackle that is playing out of position. Keep an eye on him to see if he can handle the transition.

Browns Biggest Loss:

Matt Roth: Roth had a very solid season last year with the Browns. He put up 59 tackles, 3.5 sacks and started 16 games for the team. The team will need to hope some of their other ends will step up to fill his shoes.

Packers Biggest Loss:

Cullen Jenkins: Losing the big man in the middle is causing the Packers to have to shift some of their players around in order to still field an effective pass rush. Jenkins was offered a five-year, $25 million contract from the Eagles that the Packers just could not match. His production will be sorely missed in Green Bay.

What They’re Saying:

P.J Ziegler of FOX 8 Cleveland is saying that the new Browns’ 4-3 defense will be one of the highlights of tonight’s game. New defensive coordinator, Dick Jauron, is installing it.  Ziegler also notes that Montario Hardesty and Mohamed Massaquoi will be noticeably absent due to injury.

The Pierce County Herald is reporting that starting cornerbacks Charles Woodson and Tramon Williams sat out of practice on Thursday. They may play only a few snaps apiece tonight, if they even play at all. The team does not need to deal with injury again this season as it almost derailed them during the previous one.

What’s Worth Watching?:

The Browns new systems on offense and defense. Having a whole new offense installed will certainly change the way the Browns play the game. Colt McCoy should be able to quickly adapt as he has a year of NFL experience under his belt and Sam Bradford was able to understand it in his first season.

The Browns will also be running a 4-3 for the first time under a new defensive coordinator. The high-powered Packers will be a good test of it.

Biggest Storyline:

The Green Bay Packers return to the football field. The team won the Super Bowl last season and everyone is out to get them this season. They sneaked into the playoffs as the sixth seed in the NFC last season and took the postseason by surprise. This year, they are the Super Bowl favorites and have a bullseye on their back.  It will be interesting to see if they can handle the pressure.
