Tim Lincecum Becomes 2nd Giant To Win Cy Young Award
MLB.com has reported that Tim Lincecum has won the 2008 Cy Young Award, beating out Johan Santana and Brandon Webb, and denying C.C. Sabathia's bid to win the award in consecutive years but in different leagues. Santana was himself a two-time Cy Young winner with the Twins.
It had been 41 years since Mike McCormick became the first Giant to win the award in 1967. Juan Marichal was famously snubbed for the award several times, but at the age of 24, in only his second season, Lincecum has accomplished what one of the greatest pitchers in franchise history could not.
Interestingly, when Webb won his Cy Young two years ago, his team was also under .500. In 1972, Steve Carlton won nearly half of his team's games, accounting for 27 victories for a horrible 59-97 Phillies team.

Across the Bay, the last Oakland pitcher to win the award was . . . you guessed it, Barry Zito.
