UFC: The 7 UFC Champions and the Fighter That Could Most Likely Beat Them
There are a multitude of fighters in the UFC but there are so many who are viewed as truly great. However, there is a dividing line event among those those lucky enough to be considered great; the greatest of the great are considered nigh unbeatable.
However, MMA history has demonstrated that even the fiercest of fighters can be beat by the right person; every fighter has an Achilles' heel, after all.
Of the best fighters in each weight class in the UFC, there is at least one competitor who stands a pretty decent shot of victory. Who are these fighters and who are the fighters who could most likely beat them? Read and find out!
Dominick Cruz: Demetrius Johnson
1 of 7If there is one man at bantamweight who has the answer to champion Dominick Cruz's elusive, fast-paced style it is Demetrius "Mighty Mouse" Johnson.
Johnson is 11-1 and the only loss came by way of decision; he has never been finished. On the other hand, Cruz has not truly finished an opponent since March 2008 and it wasn't anyone special.
In addition, the non-stop, smothering wrestling attack of Johnson is extremely difficult to stop. It'll be even harder for Cruz, who has demonstrated in his recent fights that he can't put opponents away with his striking.
Thus, Johnson will eventually run Cruz down and smother him with superior wrestling, clinch work and top control en route to a unanimous decision victory or late TKO.
Jose Aldo: Chad Mendes
2 of 7In almost all of his fights, UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo has looked like an unstoppable machine akin to the Terminator or an Agent from The Matrix.
However, as was said in the preface to the slideshow, all fighters are beatable and there is always somebody with a skill-set that just presents a bad match for the "unbeatable" fighter.
For Jose Aldo, this fighter is none other than Chad Mendes.
The reasons why Mendes would be successful have already been detailed in a previous article and won't be recalled in detail here, suffice it to say that no opponent has had an answer for the Mendes' superlative wrestling. It is possible, and even likely, that Jose Aldo and his leg kicks won't break that trend.
In addition, Mendes will have valuable insight into how to fight Aldo since he trains with Urijah Faber, a man who fought Aldo once before.
Frankie Edgar: Gray Maynard
3 of 7Frankie "The Answer" Edgar has a very difficult style to match. He is extremely quick, has great footwork, excellent wrestling, good boxing and can scramble off of his back very well. His fighting spirit is also second to none at lightweight.
The only fighter who can beat a man with such a style is the only man who has done so thus far: Gray "The Bully" Maynard.
Maynard is 1-0-1 against Edgar and has the strength, wrestling and striking power to put Edgar away for good.
Georges St-Pierre: Jake Shields/Rory Macdonald
4 of 7The truth is, UFC welterweight Georges St-Pierre is as close to unbeatable as any of the current UFC champions get.
The closest St-Pierre came to looking fallible was against Jake Shields at UFC 129. Shields managed to impair St-Pierre's vision and in doing so made the stand up game a lot more even, despite still coming out the loser in a decision victory.
However, a Shields-St-Pierre II would likely have a different result (and that result would be a St-Pierre victory about nine times out of ten).
But there must be at least one fighter who could beat St-Pierre, right? Well at this moment there may not be, but there is one fighter who has the potential, Rory Macdonald.
I will definitely take a lot of heat for putting him on here, but it's totally possible that Macdonald will fight St-Pierre sometime in the future when St-Pierre's skills have waned and Macdonald's are at their peak. The fact that Macdonald said he wouldn't ask for a title shot at St-Pierre notwithstanding (Jon Jones and Rashad Evans said the same thing and look what happened there).
Nevertheless, Macdonald is still unproven while Shields has done the most damage to St-Pierre of all the recent fighters who have fought him. So take your pick.
Anderson Silva: Chael Sonnen
5 of 7Current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and middleweight contender Chael Sonnen are essentially the opposites of one another; Silva is the ying to Sonnen's yang. If there is an afterlife, Silva and Sonnen will be fighting in it for all eternity.
Chael Sonnen has been the only man to make Anderson Silva look mortal in the UFC and he even managed to tag Silva on the feet with some devastating shots, an accomplishment that seemed impossible.
Sonnen still has the perfect skill-set out of all the fighters at middleweight to beat Silva. All Sonnen needs to do is learn how to defend the triangle better and he will beat Silva.
Jon Jones: Rashad Evans/Phil Davis
6 of 7Again, this one is difficult. While Jon Jones is often touted as the total package, we haven't seen enough of him against the highest echelon of competition to really know who at light heavyweight could beat him.
It's possible that Rashad Evans could be the one due to his quick striking, strong wrestling and insight into Jones' style and weaknesses since they trained together.
However, it's also possible that once light heavyweight prospect Phil Davis finishes rounding out his game that he could be a threat to Jones.
Some also say that Lyoto Machida is the one to beat Jones, due to his elusive style, while others say that Forrest Griffin is destined to beat the champ because of his size.
Therefore, it's simply too difficult to name just one fighter who could beat Jones at light heavyweight since we haven't seen him defend his title enough times against the very best while they're at their best.
Cain Velasquez: Junior Dos Santos
7 of 7UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is a fighter with great wrestling and good hands. Junior Dos Santos is a fighter with excellent hands, stunning power and has a good sprawl.
While many might say that Velaquez's wrestling advantage will negate any advantage in the stand up that Dos Santos has, this may not be true.
Many are forgetting that French UFC heavyweight Cheick Kongo was close to putting Velasquez's lights out on several occasions in their fight at UFC 99.
Dos Santos has also faced tougher competition overall. There is a clear discrepancy in the talent each man has faced.
Compare Dos Santos' big wins over Shane Carwin, Roy Nelson, Gabriel Gonzaga, Gilbert Yvel, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, Stefan Struve and Fabricio Werdum to Velaquez's notable wins over Brock Lesnar, Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, Ben Rothwell and Cheick Kongo.
Dos Santos can stop Velasquez's takedowns and nail him with his trademark uppercut enough times to send the champ to the mat, asleep.
