Nebraska Football: Gammons Tweet About Pelini, Starling Defies Logic
(Bo Pelini, not threatening anyone as a result of a @pgammo tweet)
Welcome to the Husker Hotwire, the sometimes-weekly, sometimes-funny look at Husker athletics!
The staff at the Husker Hotwire has seen some strange things. Some of those things are still the subject of a restraining order due to that unfortunate evening in Grand Island and therefore cannot be discussed in a public forum.
Some of them were shining examples of cynicism and greed that will harden the heart of even the gentlest of souls.
But it came as a surprise even to the jaded pseudo-journalists at the Hotwire staff when news broke over the week that head Cornhusker Bo Pelini had to respond to a tweet by long-time baseball journalist Peter Gammons.
Specifically, @pgammo tweeted that, "Bo Pellini [sic] going off and threatening Bubba Starling is great news for the Royals."
(Yes, we included the [sic] to show the misspelling of Pelini. There's at least some level of journalistic integrity at the Hotwire. Plus, we didn't want you thinking that it was our spelling error.)
There were a number of things that struck the Hotwire staff as strange about Gammons' tweet. First, why would Pelini threaten Starling?
Not only is Starling a heck of a lot bigger, younger and stronger than Pelini, he's also got somewhere between five and eight million reasons to ignore Pelini and go play a game where you can miss a week with a hangnail.
Second, it was unclear exactly what Pelini would threaten Starling with. If it wasn't a physical threat, it's not like Pelini has a lot of leverage on the young phenom.
Somehow, a threat to not allow Starling to play football for Nebraska doesn't seem all that scary if Starling has the chance to make millions by not playing football for Nebraska.
There has been no further response from Gammons' Twitter account on the Starling story. As a result, the Hotwire staff has come up with two possible responses to get Gammons out of this mess.
First, he says that this "Pellini" person he was referring to wasn't the Nebraska coach, but an extra-aggressive pizza delivery guy who got upset with Starling after he got stiffed a tip.
After all, being a college student requires having a good relationship with the pizza delivery guys, and if that's not going to happen, maybe Starling would just take the money and play for the Royals.
The other idea would be that Gammons could say his Twitter account was hacked, and that he really didn't send out that tweet. That didn't work out so well for a certain ex-congressman from New York, and we're hopeful Gammons doesn't pick that road in fear of what pictures might be coming later.
The Twitter account for the actual Bo Pelini, @BoPelini, hasn't said a word about the Gammons controversy. But the fake Bo Pelini account,@FauxPelini (which is one of the funniest Twitter accounts around and you should be following) gave the response we would all expect to hear:
"Last thing, Gammons: When you mess with 3 guys named Bo, Bubba, and Jimbo [Starling's father], it usually doesn't end well."
BEEONEGEE CONFERENCE UPDATE
At the Husker Hotwire, we are committed to provide you with ongoing coverage of Nebraska's new B1G Conference rivals. Buckeye Hotwire was very relieved to report that the NCAA has sent a letter to Ohio State informing the school that they are still under investigation for possible violations of NCAA rules. The folks at Buckeye Hotwire were worried, after news came out that the first violation letter had been basically resolved, that they would have to actually talk about football. With a second NCAA investigation starting, there seems little danger of that in the immediate future.
AROUND THE HOTWIRE NETWORK
Aggie Hotwire reports that Texas governor Rick Perry, a Texas A&M alum, told reporters that the school has been in contact with the SEC about a conference relocation. According to ESPN.com, Perry said "I'll be real honest with you, I just read about it the same time as y'all did ... As far as I know, conversations are being had."
Which doesn't actually confirm much of anything other than Perry reads the news about Texas A&M like everybody else, but it did give ESPN an excuse to run a pretty alarming headline on it's story. And use the word "y'all" in a quote.
Nittany Lion Hotwire reports that head Lion Joe Paterno is back on the sidelines with his arm in a sling after going to the hospital when a player bowled him over during practice. The 84-year-old Paterno, once again in a golf cart after a sideline injury, told reporters he didn't want to be a distraction to his team. An obstacle, perhaps, but not a distraction.
Bronco Hotwire reports that Boise State has fired athletic director Gene Bleymaier due to the school's alleged involvement in NCAA violations. Not because Bleymaier was the AD when Boise State assaulted the eyeballs of a nation with a blue football field and started a disturbing trend of oddly-colored fields in college football, although the aesthetically-minded amongst us might think that was sufficient grounds for termination.
