PGA Championship 2011: Adam Scott Overshadowed by Loudmouthed Steve Williams
Adam Scott won the Bridgstone Invitational and all anyone can talk about is what the win means for his caddie, Steve Williams.
Williams is no stranger to winning at the Bridgestone Invitational. As Tiger Woods' former caddy, he's seen plenty of success at the course. He's not afraid to let everyone know what the win meant for him after getting dumped by Tiger either.
What's sad is that Scott's big win turned into Williams' big win. It's as though rather than Williams carrying the bag for Scott, Scott is swinging the clubs for Williams.
That's just not how it should be. Williams has forgotten himself. You give a caddy some endorsements and all of a sudden he thinks he deserves all of the hype he is receiving for being tied to one of the greatest golfers of all time.
I've got much more respect for Arnold Palmer's caddy in the SportsCenter commercial, where Palmer makes and Arnold Palmer. See what the caddy did there? Take note Williams.
Scott is currently one of the favorites, but his accolades are going unnoticed because of his loudmouthed caddy. It's really unfortunate and though Scott won his last tournament, is it really hard to see why Tiger parted ways with this guy?
It's got to be frustrating for Scott to turn on the TV and hear nothing but jibber jabber about his caddy. He's a caddy for crying out loud. Let's talk about the golfers, and not in the way that Williams talks about the golfers either.
Somewhere along the line, the lines became blurred between caddy and player. Golf is not a team sport, sir. Let your golfer have his day in the sun, as your job is to be of assistance, not to become the story.
As Scott heads into the PGA Championship in search of his major championship, let's all hope that Williams doesn't break headlines again if he wins.
Williams has acknowledged that his actions at the Bridgestone Invitational were a bit over the top. Hopefully it's a lesson learned and we won't have to hear his name again until he decides to write a book about all that he has seen and done on the PGA Tour.
