5 Lessons Carson Palmer Should Learn During Potential Retirement

Andrew RobesonJun 7, 2018

Well it looks like Carson Palmer is retired...for the time being.

The once promising quarterback's career is possibly over at the young age of 31. Despite winning a Heisman in college and twice being a Pro Bowler Palmer has never won a playoff and several times in his career threw nearly as many interceptions as touchdowns in a season.

Unfortunately for him Palmer's NFL career will be more remembered for what he didn't accomplish than what he did.

Here are five lessons he can hopefully learn with his newly found free time.

5. Don't Act so Miserable

1 of 5

Maybe it was just me, but Palmer came across sounding like a spoiled brat throughout this whole situation.

It wasn't just me?

I'm no sports agent but spoiled brats aren't exactly marketable. Whether it be for Nike, or another team, no one could reasonably justify all the things that Palmer said and did during his path to retirement.

Somehow Palmer wasn't criticized for acting like a prima donna, but that's exactly what he was doing. Hopefully he can learn how to come off nicer in retirement.

4. Learn from Others

Hey Palmer, while you're home this season buy NFL Ticket or something.

You need to watch some good quarterbacks play and learn from them, just in case you unretire.

These are the guys you could have played like had your talents translated into good play.

Some lessons to take down are: don't throw into coverage, quit panicking, and don't get happy feet.

3. Don't Brag About Your Net Worth

3 of 5

Palmer famously told reporters that he had "$80 million in the bank."

This isn't even about football, this is just about common sense.

People, in general, don't like the wealthy. Especially the ones who brag about it. Do you realize how many of your old fans lifetime salaries you would have to combine to get 80 million dollars Palmer/

It's great that you saved your money, congratulations, but keep that to yourself. We don't need to know your net worth. Palmer just as easily could have said he has enough money to retire on without throwing out a specific figure.

Plus if we all know that he has that much money, so do the crooks. Not wise Palmer.

2. Don't Blame Your Teammates

4 of 5

OK so Palmer never explicitly blamed his teammates, but if you read between the lines he certainly did.

Palmer's agent said in a statement that the "lack of success" Palmer and the Bengals had had was the reason he was retiring.

So you weren't a part of the problem Palmer? Everyone else was playing awful while you were playing amazing. Makes sense.

No one wants to play with a leader who is going to blame you. No wonder no team made the Bengals an offer that would convince them to deal Palmer rather than let him retire.

1. You're Not as Good as You Think You Are

5 of 5

Some of the things that were said by Palmer's camp leading up to his retirement sounded just stupid. Palmer pretty much blamed the Bengals for his struggles as a quarterback. And while the team certainly wasn't perfect, neither was Palmer.

The Bengals organization certainly didn't throw 110 interceptions in 97 career games—that was all you, Palmer.

Palmer obviously felt that his threat to retire would force the Bengals to deal him and recover some draft picks. What he didn't count on was that he probably had little trade value and the Bengals probably would have had to cut him.

Obviously President Mike Brown would rather have Palmer retired than go out there ready to make the Bengals look like fools.

Who's the fool now?
