WWE Summerslam: Top 5 Underrated Matches in Summerslam History
As a part of my "Summerslam Series", we have touched on a quite a few topics. Today is going to be all about the underappreciated. The matches not many talk about. The matches that most have forgotten about over past history.
All were good matches but just can't seem to stand out for one reason or another. These matches can be anywhere on the card, as long as they were good bouts, but not remembered as much as other classic Summerslam contests.
5. Lance Storm vs Edge for the IC Title: 2001
1 of 5This match opened Summerslam 10 years ago and was a great match.
Of course, with Lance and Edge in the ring together, I would expect nothing less. One of the few WCW stars worth giving a push to when they debuted during the Invasion angle, versus a man clearly on the rise in the solo ranks.
These two showed exactly why their in-ring skills were more than enough to be on the PPV, with Edge coming out on top in the end.
In my opinion, this was Lance Storm "peaking" in his career, and he did a fine job putting Edge over. Great effort that I wish more would mention.
4. Cena vs Batista: 2008
2 of 5I touched on this match before and likely will again. To be honest with you, I am not quite sure why this match gets shoved to the side so often. It was a dream match. It was a perfect feud—an "I'm better than you, I can beat you" match. Best of all, it was a clean finish.
My guess is people see it involves Cena and will automatically jump on the "he can't wrestle" bandwagon that has been long done with for over five years now.
On the other side—Batista. Here is another guy that just won't get the credit he deserves.
I hate to sound like a broken record, but my hats off to both men!
3. Kurt Angle vs Rey: 2002
3 of 5This one was very close to making one of my other lists but didn't. You have two future Hall of Famers opening up Summerslam in 2002 and delivering a great match.
One is a clear heel. One is a clear face. A perfectly clean finish here.
If you have not seen this full bout, go watch it!
This was during Rey's opening months in the company, and he proved why he was more than just a "cruiserweight". He could go with the best of them, and on that night he did.
2. DX vs McMahons: 2006
4 of 5How many of you even remember that this match took place? Exactly my point.
Talk about an entertaining 20 minutes. When you talk about "sports entertainment fun", look no further than the McMahons and DX playing off of one another.
This tag-team grudge match was on the 2006 card, which was a stacked card. I mean...stacked card! Look up the PPV, watch it, and pay close attention to this match because you will know exactly what I mean.
Now to my No. 1 selection that is sure to have differing opinions...
1. Elimination Chamber for the World Title: 2003
5 of 5Yes, this match has been criminally underrated. I mean, it is not even funny how much I enjoyed this Elimination Chamber.
HHH (champ) vs. Goldberg vs. HBK vs. Nash vs. Jericho vs. Orton. Six legends in this business going at it for the World Championship on the second biggest show of the year.
No idea why people trash this match so much. Maybe it was the year 2003 itself? A dreadful year for the Raw brand, no doubt. Maybe it was Triple H pinning Goldberg? Boo-hoo! Cry me a river! Maybe it was the fact that Triple H was hurt and couldn't do much?
I don't know exactly. It was a great bout. It was a great booking and an even better ending. Amazing job all around and one of the best Summerslam matches nobody remembers!
