UFC 133 Results: 5 Fights Alexander Gustafsson Should Take Next

First LastJun 4, 2018

MMA fans weren't really sure of just how good Alexander Gustafsson was before his fight with Matt Hamill at UFC 133.

The 24-year-old won in impressive fashion by stopping the former Ultimate Fighter competitor in the second round of their light heavyweight bout. A series of uppercuts and ground and pound finished the fight for the Swedish fighter.

Now, Gustafsson launches himself into the best of the new breed at 205 pounds. His only loss is to Phil Davis, who is still undefeated and quickly rising up the ranks.

These are five possible opponents we'd love to see him fight next.

No. 5: Vladimir Matyushenko

1 of 5

MMA veteran Vladimir Matyushenko was originally supposed to face Gustafsson before pulling out due to an injury suffered in training.

Matyushenko is a former UFC light heavyweight title challenger and has a 26-5 record with wins over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Jason Brilz, Pedro Rizzo and Tim Boetsch.

He is currently on a two-fight win streak and is 4-1 since returning to the UFC in 2009. His only loss out of his last five bouts is to current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones.

Gustafsson's weakest area is wrestling, and that is one area "The Janitor" excels at.

No. 4: Stephan Bonnar

2 of 5

Stephan Bonnar is a fan-favorite among the MMA world. He has a 13-7 record and has never been stopped by anything other than cuts in his career.

That's impressive considering the quality of opposition he has faced over the years. His resume includes fighters like Forrest Griffin, Rashad Evans, Jon Jones, James Irvin, Lyoto Machida and Keith Jardine.

Gustafsson is called "The Mauler" because of his finishing ability. It would be a big challenge for him to face arguably the toughest fighter to finish in the division.

No. 3: Krzysztof Soszynski

3 of 5

Krzysztof Soszynski is 26-11-1 in MMA and a former heavyweight fighter. He is currently 6-2 in the UFC with four wins by submission and TKO.

Soszynski is a powerful fighter at 205 pounds and could be an intriguing matchup to test Gustafsson's strength. Both don't like to go the distance, and their records prove it. Soszynski has finished 21 opponents while Gustafsson has finished 11 of his opponents.

This could make for a great PPV opener bout.

No. 2: Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

4 of 5

Gustafsson possibly could have replaced Rogerio Nogueira against Rich Franklin at UFC 133. Franklin declined him as an opponent because of his lack of name value.

Rogerio Nogueira is currently on a two-fight losing streak and needs a victory bad. He has been out-wrestled in most of his UFC career so a fight with Gustafsson could be the type of fighter he is looking for.

This could turn into a great striking battle. Nogueira has boxing experience and a great chin. Gustafsson is a long and rangy fighter and utilizes kicks and punches very well.

No. 1: Tito Ortiz

5 of 5

Tito Ortiz may not want to accept a fight so soon after coming off his loss to Rashad Evans, but this is a matchup that makes a lot of sense.

Gustafsson had no trouble in putting Hamill away while Ortiz dropped a lackluster decision to him last year. Ortiz couldn't do anything to Hamill while Gustafsson handled him pretty easily once he connected with his power shots in the second round.

Ortiz isn't at the top of the division despite his recent victory over Ryan Bader, and Gustafsson is quickly making a case for a top 10 position. Ortiz could be the opponent to launch his career in the right direction.
