Floyd Mayweather vs. Bernard Hopkins: Which Undercard Will Be More Entertaining?
Two highly interesting HBO PPV fight cards have emerged from Golden Boy Promotions. The first is Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz on September 17th.
Besides the sure-to-be-interesting main event, Mexican legend Erik Morales (51-7, 35 KOs) will be sure to impress on Mexican Independence Day weekend against the much younger and stronger foe, Lucas Matthysse (28-2, 26 KOs).
Saul Alvarez (37-0-1, 27 KOs) will defend his Light Middleweight World Championship against former contender Alfonso Gomez (23-4-2, 12 KOs) at a separate site at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The Alvarez fight will be broadcast via live feed at the MGM Grand where Mayweather-Ortiz will be taking place. Those watching on HBO PPV will see Alvarez vs. Gomez in addition to Mayweather vs. Ortiz.
The second highly anticipated HBO PPV pits Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KOs) against Chad Dawson (30-1, 17 KOs) for the Light Heavyweight World Championship on October 15th. This fight card will be held at the Staples Center.
Jorge Linares (31-1, 20 KOs) takes on Antonio DeMarco (25-2-1, 18 KOs) for a vacant Lightweight World Championship. Both are 25 years old, talented and come ready to fight.
Anselmo Moreno (31-1-1, 11 KOs) defends his Bantamweight World Championship against Eric Morel (42-2, 21 KOs). Morel is a talented veteran who has conquered 112 and 115 in previous fights and aims to take over at 118 lbs.
Moreno has held his championship for over three years against a plethora of competition.
Both televised fightcards will kick off with a breakout star being highlighted.
Mayweather-Ortiz will kick off with Roger Mayweather-trained Jesse Vargas (16-0, 9 KOs) taking on Joseito Lopez (29-3, 17 KOs) for a regional title in the Light Welterweight division (140 lbs).
The 22-year-old Vargas triumphed over veteran journeyman Walter Estrada (39-15-1, 25 KOs) and former world champion Vivian Harris (29-7-1, 19 KOs) in fights earlier this year, but he must be careful against Lopez.
In Lopez's most recent fight this year, he knocked out previously undefeated Mike Dallas, Jr. (17-1-1, 6 KOs).
Hopkins-Dawson kicks off with Danny Garcia (21-0, 14 KOs) taking on former champion Kendall Holt (27-4, 15 KOs) in a bid to prove he's ready for a title shot at the 140-lb. division, where he ranks No. 10 in Ring Magazine's rankings.
The 23-year-old Garcia already beat a former world champion in Nate Campbell (33-8-1, 25 KOs), but a win against Holt will prove much more to boxing fans.
Unlike Campbell, Holt is coming off two dominating TKO wins from earlier in the year, one in the first round against Lenin Arroyo (20-15-1, 4 KOs) and one in the third round against Julio Diaz (38-7, 27 KOs).
Both fightcards have aged veterans hoping to use what magic they have left to entertain and inspire. Morales' big junior welterweight fight earlier in the year was against Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KOs).
Morales came up short in an entertaining fight, but he won over the fans who once thought he was past his better days in the ring. Now Morales aims to do even better and beat the hard-hitting Matthysse.
Matthysse was been compared to his hard-hitting Argentine countryman Maidana, but they are at totally opposite ends of the spectrum of boxing success.
Maidana has had multiple title shots and epic fights with the likes of Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KOs) and Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KOs).
Matthysse has had to struggled to get title shots, and so far he's been bamboozled out of the victory in every opportunity that's arrived.
Zab Judah (41-7, 28 KOs) took away Matthysse's first big chance at fame by way of split decision, despite being down once and being mostly defensive throughout the fight. Matthysse blamed this on the fight being near Judah's hometown.
Devon Alexander (22-1, 13 KOs) was the next to take an even more deserved victory from Matthysse.
Alexander was brutalized and beaten throughout the majority of the fight, even hitting the canvas once, only to be rewarded a split decision victory in his hometown of Saint Louis.
Matthysse will likely hope to avoid a hometown decision against him, seeing that Morales will be far from his hometown of Tijuana, Mexico.
On the Hopkins-Dawson undercard, 36-year-old Morel will be hoping to end the long title run Moreno. Moreno recently signed to Golden Boy likely with hopes of facing the young rising star Abner Mares (21-0-1, 13 KOs).
If Morel can defeat Moreno and then eventually beat a world champion at super bantamweight (122 lbs), he becomes the first Puerto Rican to win a world title in four weight divisions.
So, fight fans, who's undercard do you think will be more entertaining? Mayweather-Ortiz or Hopkins-Dawson? Feel free to vote to your right and comment down below.
