UFC 133 Results: Is Rory MacDonald the Next Georges St-Pierre?

Dale De SouzaJun 1, 2018

After his second win in a row since his UFC 115 loss to Carlos Condit, Rory MacDonald—whom I referred to as Rory "Ares" MacDonald after his win at UFC 133 over Mike Pyle—is already hearing it now.

He's already hearing people make the claim that he might be the next Georges St-Pierre.

Now, I can see something of a parallel in that the greatest welterweight in MMA history, Matt Hughes, handed GSP his first loss, and former WEC welterweight champion Condit beat MacDonald in what is MacDonald's only loss so far.

However, that's the only argument you could make to MacDonald being the next GSP, and actually, to be perfectly honest, the mere notion that MacDonald would even be partially expected to be the next GSP simply because a former welterweight champion handed each man their first career loss—and also simply because both are Canadian—is too ridiculous to be put in print.

Now, I'm not pretending like Rory MacDonald cannot be great, because I too have said that he's the future of the sport in that division and I refuse to believe that MacDonald would not end his career as anything less than great in eyes of fans who feverishly followed that division.

Rory MacDonald will be a man that cannot be talked about without the phrases "UFC welterweight champion" or "UFC welterweight title contender," and he has what it takes to develop into the pound-for-pound No. 1 in the world at some time in the future.

However, MacDonald will not be in the cage for a fight against a Matt Serra or a Jon Fitch, nor a BJ Penn or a Jake Shields, nor even a Matt Hughes, a Thiago Alves, a Dan Hardy or a Nick Diaz.

The sport—especially in the welterweight division—will evolve to where someone like Fitch or Shields or even Penn could not survive on their current skill set.

MacDonald is clearly a sort that will evolve and will find different ways of finishing off foes in the seemingly simplest of manners.

He will do things that not even St-Pierre had ever thought of doing, and in the process he might be the youngest holder of the UFC welterweight title as a result of it.

It will take time before MacDonald becomes great, but one thing is for certain.

Rory MacDonald will not be the next Georges St-Pierre.

Rory MacDonald will go down in history as the only Rory MacDonald, period.
