Is Sean Avery's Time with the New York Rangers Coming to an End?

Brandon GudovitzJun 7, 2018

Sean Avery of the New York Rangers is best described as a pest on the ice, and now it appears he has become one off the ice. Avery made news this week, being arrested at his Hollywood Hills home in California.

Early Friday morning, the police were dispatched to Avery's house for a noise complaint. Avery allegedly answered the door, shoved an officer and slammed the door. When the officers knocked a second time, Avery cooperated and was arrested for battery on a police officer.

The New York Ranger was later released after posting $20,000 bail.

Sean Avery also made other news recently, when a former teammate accused Avery of using racial slurs to agitate opponents. Alexander Frolov, who spent time with Avery in Los Angeles and New York, reportedly said that Sean Avery would call opponents "black monkeys."

The term "monkey" is extremely offensive to European athletes. That word would be equivocal to the infamous "N" word known by Americans.

Opponents often complain of Avery's tactics on the ice, but only Georges Laraque has accused Sean of using racial slurs, back in 2005. This is not the first time that Avery has been accused of saying some controversial things.

In 2007, Avery allegedly had some remarks about Jason Blake and his struggle with a recently diagnosed form of leukemia, which eventually led to a pregame altercation.

"I am extremely upset and hurt that false and damaging comments were attributed to me regarding Jason Blake," Avery said then. "I made no such comments. I have lost two grandfathers to cancer and have been a consistent contributor to multiple cancer-related charities, first and foremost, Hockey Fights Cancer."

For this most recent issue, the Rangers organization had no comment regarding the issue, as they will discuss this matter at a later time.
