Randy Moss: 5 Reasons to Believe Eagles Target Isn't Done Yet
According to a number of people, the Philadelphia Eagles are apparently thinking about or have already attempted to coax Randy Moss out of retirement.
Moss just recently announced his retirement from the National Football League on Monday via agent Joel Segal.
It seemed like an insincere retirement and Moss certainly has the ability to still play football in this league.
Former teammate, Robert Smith, thinks that the whole thing is a ploy to drum up publicity for the enigmatic wide receiver.
Smith points out that Segal announced, a few weeks before the retirement, that Moss was in the best shape of his life and had a chip on his shoulder for this coming season.
Smith also knows Randy personally and believes that the desire to have a ring strongly burns in a fierce competitor like Moss. Without one, Moss’ legacy is tarnished and the mercurial wide receiver apparently cares very much about it.
Cris Carter, another former teammate, believes the retirement was a move to show how upset he was when the Patriots reportedly only offered him a one-year deal.
Moss was looking for a multi-year deal to stay with the Patriots, the team he loved, for his loyalty during the three years he played with them.
The Eagles would love to add Randy Moss to their "Dream Team" and give them a legitimate red zone threat. The team made a run at Plaxico Burress for the same reason but Randy Moss would be even better.
It may cost them a multi-year deal and some incentives to draw Moss out of retirement, but it could be completely worth it.
It will be interesting to see if Moss follows through with his retirement, but many believe he will be coming out shortly and here are five reasons why.
5. Touchdown Record
1 of 5Randy Moss and Terrell Owens are currently deadlocked at 153 touchdowns apiece for second all time in NFL History.
They both trail Jerry Rice, who has 197 and is most likely out of reach.
Terrell Owens is going to try and play another season. If he catches on with a team, and he probably will, in all likelihood he will pass Moss for sole possession of second place on that list.
Moss is four years younger than T.O. and could easily play another six years, albeit not at as high a level but he would certainly remain productive if he desired.
I personally thought Moss had a real shot at challenging Rice’s 197 TDs if he had played the full season with unanimous MVP Tom Brady last season and stuck with him for the remainder of his career.
The record is out of the question now but if Moss really wants to come back, he would be able to compete with T.O. for runner-up.
4. Still Needed
2 of 5Randy Moss is simply still needed in the National Football League.
Unlike Terrell Owens, who is scrambling to find a home after burning almost every bridge, Moss has a number of teams who still respect him.
While the Raiders, Vikings and Titans most likely would not welcome him back, almost every other team in the league would take a flier on Moss.
The Patriots were apparently interested in bringing Moss in for another year, but the wide out felt insulted over their one-year contract offer.
Perhaps the Eagles, who attempted to get Plaxico as a big, red-zone target, could offer Moss a two-year deal and appease him.
Moss would certainly mull this decision over and could possibly find himself in Philly next season. He would be the receiver they need to complete the "Dream Team."
3. Ability
3 of 5Randy Moss isn’t washed up.
Everyone threw that term around when he toiled away on the Oakland Raiders for two years.
I’m sure you know what happened after he got traded to the New England Patriots.
Moss put up an NFL single season receiving touchdown record by hauling in 23 of Captain Tom Brady’s 50 touchdown passes.
Even last year Moss displayed flashes of ability, especially in the early season.
Moss took it right to Darrell Revis after Revis called Moss a "slouch" in the offseason.
Moss turned on his jets and completely burned the Jets’ Revis for an incredible one-handed touchdown, one of the finest in his career.
Moss did this at an advanced age against the best corner in the league in his prime. Randy still has his talent, so don’t let his lack of motivation after being traded and cut in the same season fool you.
The Eagles and their ability to win a Super Bowl next year should be plenty of motivation if they sign Moss. He also has a "chip on his shoulder" if agent Joel Segal is correct.
2. Age
4 of 5Moss is retiring very, very early for a good receiver in this league.
Let’s look at some of the other receivers who were considered to be elite, like Moss, the age that they retired.
Jerry Rice – 42
Cris Carter – 37
Marvin Harrison – 36
Tim Brown – 38
Isaac Bruce – 37
Terrell Owens is 37 and still active.
These are all some of the most elite receivers in NFL history and Moss already has surpassed many of the records they set at the age of 34.
By retiring now, Moss would be throwing up to eight years of his historic career away. While eight seasons is a ridiculous number, Jerry Rice managed to do it and remain relatively productive due to his vigorous and unparalleled offseason routines.
Moss has the ability to do this and you never know if he will find that type of inspiration late in his career.
1. Super Bowl
5 of 5Randy Moss’ biggest concern is apparently his legacy.
Adding a ring would be the crown jewel of the Hall of Fame receiver’s resume.
The Philadelphia Eagles give Moss a great chance to win a title and are the Super Bowl favorites for next season.
Moss came within minutes of winning his first title in the 2008 Super Bowl versus the New York Giants.
Instead of celebrating a perfect 19-0 season, Moss had to sit on the sideline and watch Eli Manning connect with David Tyree’s forehead. This set up a touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress and the rest is history.
That must have been painful for Moss to experience that and may have caused him to realize just how important and memorable getting a ring would be.
A Super Bowl would be a defining moment of his career and coming out of retirement to chase that victory with the Eagles is his best bet.
