Kansas City Royals Prospect Watch: Johnny Giavotella

Bill RobbinsJun 7, 2018

The Kansas City Royals currently boast one of the best farm systems in all of baseball.

So far this season, they have already called up three of their top prospects in Eric Hosmer, Danny Duffy and Mike Moustakas.

Hosmer is the only one of the trio to make a solid impact thus far, hitting .282 with 10 homers and 46 runs batted in.

With the 2011 season slowly slipping away for KC, many begin to wonder when the next wave of Royals prospects will be called up to the big leagues.

Leading the next wave is top second base prospect Johnny Giavotella.

He was drafted by the organization in the second round of the 2008 MLB Draft.

The former University of New Orleans star has quietly been tearing up Triple-A pitching this season for the Omaha Storm Chasers.

Here are his current 2011 stats as of Aug. 2:

G: 107

Runs: 65

H: 149

2B: 32

HR: 9

RBI: 72

SB: 9

AVG: .339

OBP: .391

E: 10

FLD%: .980

After looking at these very impressive stats, I would say that it's time for Johnny G to receive his promotion to the majors.

Especially when you consider that the Royals are currently going with no-hit second baseman Chris Getz, whose glove isn't a lot better than Giavotella's at second base.

I expect JG to get the call-up within the next two weeks, and he could be a September call-up at the very latest.

I see him taking the job at second base for good once he finally gets the call to the bigs.

Johnny Giavotella should be a hot name to watch over the next few weeks, and for the Royals' future as well.
