Fantasy Baseball Free Agent Pool: 2011 Speed Demons Vol. 8
Just because you’ve slipped behind in the Stolen Base category doesn’t mean you can’t catch up. Here are some reasonably available stolen base options.
Jason Bourgeois, Houston Astros: Bourgeois had five stolen bases over the past 15 days while hitting .310 with three runs, a home run, and four RBI. On the year, he’s hitting .344 with 17 runs, one home run, 13 RBI, and 22 stolen bases. He should see an increase in playing time with Hunter Pence and Michael Bourn being dealt. Bourgeois plays outfield and is owned in 18.0 percent of Yahoo! and 30.0 percent of ESPN leagues.
Eduardo Núñez, New York Yankees: Núñez had five RBI over the past 15 days while hitting .271 with eight runs and eight RBI. On the year he’s hitting .270 with 23 runs, three home runs, 24 RBI, and 15 stolen bases. Núñez is eligible at both third base and shortstop and is owned in 10.0 percent of Yahoo! and 33.4 percent of ESPN leagues.
Ben Revere, Minnesota Twins: Revere had five stolen bases over the past 15 days despite hitting .161 with six runs and an RBI. On the year he’s hitting .252 with 34 runs, 15 RBI, and 18 stolen bases. Whenever Denard Span returns, Revere’s value will take a major hit, but if he can shake out of this slump before that time, he could be of use. Revere plays outfield and is owned in less than five percent of fantasy leagues.
Jamey Carroll, Los Angeles Dodgers: Carrol had four stolen bases over the past 15 days while hitting .375 with three runs and two RBI. On the year he’s hitting .297 with 39 runs, ten RBI, and nine stolen bases. Carroll is eligible at second base, shortstop, third base, and outfield (in Yahoo!) and is owned in 16.0 percent of Yahoo! and 7.4 percent of ESPN leagues.
Franklin Gutiérrez, Seattle Mariners: Gutiérrez had three stolen bases over the past 15 days despite hitting .214 with four runs and two RBI. On the year, he’s hitting .195 with 15 runs, one home run, ten RBI, and eight stolen bases. Gutiérrez plays outfield and is owned in four percent of Yahoo! and 7.4 percent of ESPN leagues. I’d only use him in head-to-head leagues as spot start late in the week when your batting average category is locked in.
Tony Gwynn, Jr., Los Angeles Dodgers: Gwynn, Jr. had three stolen bases over the past 15 days while hitting .257 with four runs and three RBI. On the year he’s hitting .262 with 25 runs, 15 RBI, and 15 stolen bases. Gwynn Jr. plays outfield and is available in virtually all fantasy leagues.
Chase Headley, San Diego Padres: If you’re looking for some stolen bases at third base, Headley could possibly help. He has four over the past 15 days (.233, five runs, one HR, five RBI) and 11 on the year (.291, 39 runs, three home runs, 37 RBI). Headley is owned in 28.0 percent of Yahoo! and 49.9 percent of ESPN leagues.
Dexter Fowler, Colorado Rockies: Fowler had three stolen bases over the past 15 days while hitting .382 with 12 runs and eight RBI. On the year he’s hitting .263 with 49 runs, 26 RBI, and six stolen bases. Fowler plays outfield and is owned in 23.0 percent of Yahoo! and 35.7 percent of ESPN leagues.
