NFL: 6 Teams That Are Currently Doomed at the Quarterback Position
Elite quarterbacks are extremely hard to find, as you can count on one hand how many there truly are in this league. Majority of the league are solid or decent quarterbacks.
But some teams don't have any of the three, some teams are stuck with just flat out awful quarterbacks. These quarterbacks really prevent your team from taking the next step.
Here are the six teams that are doomed with their current quarterback situation and will find it hard to have a successful season if it doesn't change.
Seattle Seahawks
1 of 6The Seattle Seahawks made one of the most surprising signings of the off-season in Sidney Rice. But unfortunately, they also brought over Tarvaris Jackson from the Vikings as well.
Matt Hasselbeck refused to re-sign with the Seahawks and decided to join the Tennessee Titans instead. Hasselbeck is getting up there in age and has a long history of injury problems, so he really wasn't the answer anyway.
Jackson is entering his six season and has a 10-10 record as a starter in his career. He's thrown for 3,984 yards, 24 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. He is a scrabbling quarterback that often likes to force the issue. He is careless with the ball and sometimes looks like he is creating the play as it's going on.
The other quarterback on the depth chart is Charlie Whitehurst who has played in only eight games since he was drafted in 2006. He has thrown for just over 500 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
Whitehurst could be the starter heading into week one because he shows more promise than Jackson but neither quarterback is a great option. Don't expect the Seahawks to have a chance to pull off another playoff upset this season.
Miami Dolphins
2 of 6Right now the quarterback competition is a two man race in Miami as it's going to come down to Chad Henne or Matt Moore.
We all know Chad Henne, fans in Miami have been calling for his head since 2009. He has thrown six more interceptions than touchdowns and almost all of his 6,246 passing yards have been to his running backs. He is the last quarterback you want with the game on the line as he almost always throws the game away with a completion to the other team.
Matt Morre is a quarterback the Dolphins signed recently after he played three seasons with the Carolina Panthers. Moore played in a total of 22 games, thrown for 2,640 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. He has shown potential but from what I've seen, his ceiling seems to stop at a career backup quarterback.
There are still ongoing rumors that the Dolphins are still trying to get Kyle Orton. If that does happen then the quarterback situation changes, but until then, they are another team doomed at the position.
Washington Redskins
3 of 6The Washington Redskins pushed Donovan McNabb out of town and this season they will pay the price.
Redskins likely starter heading into the regular season is John Beck, who hasn't played since 2007 when he was drafted by the Miami Dolphins. He played a total of five games, throwing for 559 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. He didn't look like a starting quarterback than and he doesn't now, just ask Redskin security.
The other quarterback is Rex Grossman, the veteran who is heading into his ninth season. Grossman has a 20-14 record as a starting quarterback and has thrown 40 interceptions to his 40 touchdowns. He has shown where he can be decent at times, like in 2006 where he threw for over 3,000 yards and led the Chicago Bears to a 13-3 record. I just don't trust a quarterback that has the word 'gross' in his name.
The Redskins would have been much better off with a 35 year old McNabb, but this is what they wanted instead. Let's see how it works out for them.
Cincinnati Bengals
4 of 6The Cincinnati Bengals are a mess right now.
They refuse to trade Carson Palmer who has demanded a trade all off-season but they trade Chad Ochocinco. So, Palmer says he is going to retire rather than play another season with the Bengals, a team he has spent his entire seven year career with.
The Bengals recently signed Bruce Gradkowski who is probably going to be the starter. Bruce is familiar with offensive coordinator Jay Gruden's offense and is an older quarterback to help buy time for rookie quarterback Andy Dalton who will eventually be the future of this team.
Dalton comes out of TCU, where he threw for over 10,000 yards and 71 touchdowns in his four year career. He has potential to be a solid quarterback in this league but lacks arm strength and size to be effective any time soon.
There are going to be growing pains with a rebuilding Bengals team, especially at the quarterback position.
San Francisco 49ers
5 of 6The 49ers have talent but for the longest time can't seem to find even a decent quarterback.
Heading into this season it looks like the 49ers are going to go with Alex Smith, again. Smith is a god awful 19-31 as a starter and has thrown 53 interceptions to his 51 touchdowns. There is no hope for him, as he just lacks the talent to be even a quarterback you can get by with.
San Francisco is hoping the future is in Colin Kaepernick, the rookie out of Nevada they spent a second round pick on. Kaepernick has a cannon for an arm and can scramble just as well as he rushed for over 4,000 yards in his four year career.
Colin should become the starter at some point this season but until we see him actually play in the NFL and produce, the 49ers lack a real NFL quarterback.
Oakland Raiders
6 of 6The Oakland Raiders made huge strides last season and now playoff expectations are getting higher in Oakland. The problem is there is a lack of a good quarterback.
It looks like Jason Campbell is going to be the starter this season. Campbell is 27-37 as a starter, has thrown for over 13,000 yards, 68 touchdowns and 46 interceptions in his five-year career. Those numbers aren't that bad, but in order to take your team to the next level you have to do better.
Only 13 passing touchdowns in 329 pass attempts is not going to get it done.
There is pretty much nobody behind Campbell right now on the depth chart either, so it's all in his hands. For a team expected to make the playoffs and compete in the AFC West, I'd like to have better options at the quarterback position.
