CM Punk vs. John Cena: Who's More Deserving of the WWE Championship Right Now?

Alex HallJun 7, 2018

The rise to the top of not just the WWE world but the wrestling industry as a whole has come in just a few months for CM Punk, with him and John Cena in the middle of one of the most captivating storylines in recent memory.

It seemed like the creative team had something special when the, "CM Punk is leaving WWE" storyline began some time ago, and it has all culminated to the current situation that has both Punk and Cena holding their own versions of the WWE Championship belt.

Due to the current uncertainty with who truly is the champion leads to the obvious question: who deserves the reign more?

You could make an argument for both sides, but it's hard to see the Cena side sounding the more convincing of the two. This may not be true for the women and children in the stands, but I think many are ready to see somebody else hold (and hopefully change) the WWE Championship belt.

It would be easy for me to hate on Cena's wrestling ability and all that, but whether you like him or not, he's good for the company.

The Massachusetts-born wrestler has simply held the title enough over recent history, and it's time to see him on the opposite side, as the challenger for the gold.

CM Punk's promo at the end of Monday Night Raw on June 27 where he shocked every single viewer by mentioning people such as Colt Cabana, saying the word wrestler and spouting off about the WWE as a company was what brought his storyline from good to must see television.

After the aforementioned Raw many current and former wrestlers weighed in on Punk's words via their Twitter accounts, with former WWE superstar MVP putting it perfectly when he tweeted:

"

"My verdict after watching the CM Punk promo, he just had his Austin 3:16 moment. Don't [mess] this one up, WWE"

"

From this promo on, fans were cheering louder for the straight-edge superstar more than they were for the face of the company in Cena. Regardless of whether or not Punk is even at the arena, you can hear "CM Punk" chanted during any given Raw since June 27 and for good reason.

In a time where it seems that the "Stone Cold" like faces are being adored once again by the WWE fans (most notably Randy Orton), Punk has every reason to become the legitimate champion and continue to deliver the edgy promos he's been having along with the always impressive matches he has.

If I'm one of the WWE high-ups, I'd be trying to build the character that Punk has become week after week, and the best way to do that is to have him carry the most coveted title in the company.

Punk won the championship legitimately, and his popularity is at it's highest ever. It's time for him to become the face of Monday nights.
