HDNet Purchases IFL...Well, What's Left of It

Jason CottierOct 30, 2008

HDNet, which is owned by Mark Cuban, and is becoming known as being "the MMA" television station has recently bought out the IFL. Since most of the IFL's fighters have signed with other companies, they didn't get much as far as contract fighters go.

They did, on the other hand, get the video and picture archives. They also got the network deal with Fox Sports Network, although HDNet wouldn't need that since they are, in turn, a television station.

The teams and the ring were all property of the IFL, so they are now the property of Mark Cuban's franchise. Now, with HDNet owning a fight league all it's own, we would be able to possibly have a new MMA competition that is at least worth watching.

I was never a big fan of the IFL...To be honest, I thought it sucked. I thought the fighters were either washed up or never really should have had that much attention to begin with.

They were offered an opportunity of a lifetime to train with an MMA legend, and still, for the most part, nothing really came out of the organization, but with EliteXC going under, and a lot of fighters now looking for homes, maybe the IFL re-starting is for the best.

This will be a place for fighters that aren't quite up to standard of the UFC to improve and maybe make something of themselves. As well as fighters like Nick Diaz, Robbie Lawler, and Scott Smith, who had their chance, and now after finding a new home lost it again.

I think, with the mid-level fighters like Terry Martin, Paul Buentello, and so forth, that seem to just be bouncing around, it should be a good deal for the fans to at least see some good fights on there, as well as to see these guys focus more with a legend in their training.

I am really trying to look on the bright side here, but I am not sure how well even a financial genius like Cuban can compete with Zuffa.
