New York Islanders Could Look for Defenseman Via Trade
The New York Islanders didn't make any big signings on July 1st, but it doesn't mean that they'll come out of the summer with nothing.
The Islanders have had problems trying to get players here via free agency. A history of losing and a bad arena have made the Islanders an unattractive place for top free agents. One way to solve this is to make trades to get players here.
The Islanders GM Garth Snow said today that "any significant move the team would consider is would be to upgrade via trade." He went on to say that "the team's biggest priority is a top four defenseman" and that they are "pretty much set" with forwards.
Snow also said that he "doesn't envision this weekend to be very busy" and that he "will not give an offer sheets."
The Islanders have the pieces in their system to make a trade. If they were to make a trade for a top defenseman, it would most likely include at least one prospect. The Islanders biggest question mark is their defense. The team is in need of getting some help on the blue line. They've had problems staying healthy all season.
If the Islanders want an impact defenseman, they will need to trade. There are not many good players in this years free agent class and the defense is one of the thinnest positions available.
If trading for the rights of Christian Ehrhoff was any indication, it seems like the islanders are serious about acquiring an upper tier defenseman. We should get a better idea of the direction the Isles are taking in the next few days.
