Matt Cain, Prospects for David Wright and Mike Pelfrey: Potential "Giant" Trade?

Greg CaggianoOct 30, 2008

Just after the 2008 season of Major League Baseball came to an end last night in Philadelphia, the rumor wire began to heat up with potential trades being discussed and debated.

Because I live in New Jersey, it is very difficult to get news or any chatter about my beloved San Francisco Giants on either the television or radio. Then I heard something on Francesa on the Fan (WFAN 660) the other day that caught my attention.

A caller who was a Mets fan suggested a trade, something that I at first didn't pay any attention to, mainly for my dislike of the Mets' franchise and fan base. However, the more I thought about it, the more I thought that it could happen.

The man suggested that the San Francisco Giants trade superstar starting pitcher Tim Lincecum to the New York Mets in exchange for Mike Pelfrey and Jose Reyes. Now when I first heard this, I thought to myself, "If the Giants make this trade, I will never be able to root for this team again."

Now, my initial reaction happened because Lincecum is one of my favorite players and because Jose Reyes is the player I dislike the most in the majors because of his immaturity, cockiness and arrogance. But, if we change the players around a little bit, I might consider a trade.

I highly doubt that the Giants would trade Lincecum, a pitcher who will be in the running for this year's CY Young. But, another young stud of a pitcher they have, Matt Cain, may be more expendable.

Last season, Cain was 8-14 with a 3.76 earned run average and was in the bottom five in run support when he pitched. When you look at his season before that, he was 7-16 with an even better E.R.A of 3.65.

Combine that with the fact he has struck out over a hundred and sixty batters in each of those seasons, and you will see that he is just a victim of bad run support.

So here is the slightly far fetched but quite realistic trade I am proposing: The Giants send Matt Cain and a couple of prospects to the Mets in exchange for Mike Pelfrey and David Wright.

On the Mets, Cain could be Cy Young caliber because of their offense and run support. Meanwhile the Giants would get a solid top three pitcher in Pelfrey, and a much needed bat in Wright.

If Reyes (the Mets' offensive catalyst) has been mentioned in trades, I anticipate the asking price on him to be high. Wright, who isn't considered as valuable to their offense, should be easier and less expensive to get.

As the off season gets underway, I leave the facts in this article for you to ponder and decide if this is a fair deal or not. In my eyes, both teams make out very well.

This was my first Giants article in quite some time and I hope to be covering them more often this off-season, and all through next season. I am the community leader of the New York Rangers section here on Bleacher Report, and if you are a hockey fan, I'd be pleased if you read through some of my articles there.
