2011 Wimbledon Tennis Results: Why Maria Sharapova Will Win Wimbledon with Ease
2011 Wimbledon Tennis Results Are In, Maria Sharapova Heads To Finals
Maria Sharapova will face Petra Kvitova in the finals of Wimbledon. Sharapova beat Sabine Lisicki in the semifinals in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. She overcame 13 double faults to finally get back to a Grand Slam final, and she isn't going to be beaten.
Not many people picked Sharapova to reach the finals this year. The women's bracket was extremely difficult to pick this year because of some big time upsets.
Speaking of upsets, Kvitova reached the finals by stunning No. 4 seed Victoria Azarenka in a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win. This will be the first Grand Slam final ever for Kvitova. Unfortunately for her, she faces a very good Sharapova.
The women's final sadly won't be much of a contest because even when Sharapova doesn't think she plays well, she still dominates. After her semifinals victory today she told reporters she could have done better. Per ESPN:
"She played really well and I did quite the opposite, said Sharapova, seeded fifth. It was tough. I just had to stay focused. I got back on track and just remained really focused throughout the rest of the match.
"
Despite a lackluster performance today, Sharapova still won. Lisicki was up 3-0 in the first set, but Sharapova fought hard to come back and edge out the German. She will learn from this and bounce back well in the Finals.
Kvitova doesn't even stand a chance against the Russian because Sharapova's serve will be too much to handle.
The 2004 Wimbledon champion has dominated on the grass thus far. Sharapova has taken advantage of her competitors falling early, and she will not let some 21-year-old get in the way of her second Wimbledon title.
The 24-year-old Sharapova has the experience to cruise past Kvitova, and she will make it look easy on Saturday. Tennis would have loved having a more marquee finals match up, but at least there will be a star competing in the final at the All England Club.
