Wimbledon 2011: What We Didn't Expect to See
We've already talked about last week's shock results—Li Na and the rest—but a Grand Slam tournament always throws up some peculiarities—Wimbledon is no exception.
Here are some of my favourite oddities from SW19 this year so far, and I'm sure there'll be many more to follow in the last few days of the fortnight. Do add your own in the comments!
Federer Goes, Williams Sisters Go, the Seeds Are Scattered
1 of 5I cannot remember a time when the seeds on both sides of the draw were so thoroughly ripped apart by the outsiders. Roger Federer, Li Na, Venus and Serena, Caroline Wozniacki and the rest all got knocked out and the semi-finals look very interesting as a result.
Tsonga, Tomic, Lisicki and the Outsiders
2 of 5Sure, you get the occasional run from a lower-ranked player, but who expected to see Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Sabine Lisicki in the Wimbledon semi-finals? Who tipped Bernard Tomic to get as far as the quarter-finals? Great stuff.
William and Kate, the Royal Celebrity Guests
3 of 5Yeah, yeah, the Duchess of Kent is old news by now. After the Queen's historic visit to Wimbledon last year, Prince William and his new wife Kate decided they'd go and cheer on Andy Murray this time around. And they too got a bow from the British No. 1.
Anna Wintour Becomes a Permanent Fixture
4 of 5She's turned up at the US Open before, but I don't remember her being so very visible at Wimbledon. And she's actually needed those oversized glasses in the past few days.
Williams and Mattek-Sands' Fashion Choices
5 of 5OK, we did expect to see them, but I guess we can never really prepare ourselves for the full oddities of Venus Williams and Bethanie Mattek-Sands' fashion choices. Pom-poms, face-paint, nothing is too random for these ladies.
