Wimbledon 2011: Venus Williams and the Biggest Fashion Statements So Far

Neri SteinJun 28, 2011

Venus and Serena Williams have given the world some truly wonderful tennis. They've both been on top of the women's tennis world most of their careers, and they're also ridiculously good doubles partners.

They've also given us some ridiculous outfits. Ever since the Williams sisters decided to become tennis masters/fashion aficionados and started designing their own outfits, we tennis fans have seen them wear it all.

Lace, bright colors, different cuts, the works. The fun part is that their dabbles in fashion have encouraged the rest of the women's tour (and men's but not to an extent further than colors) to join in on the fun.

Wimbledon is hardest Grand Slam at which to make a fashion statement because of the all white rule, but these sisters never back down from a challenge. Venus showed us something new yet again, while Serena dazzled with her accessories.

Venus and Serena may both be gone from Wimbledon for this summer, but we still have the memory of their ensembles and those of their competitors.

Serena's Comeback Complete With Some Bling

1 of 6

Serena's outfit this summer at Wimbledon was rather tame, but the two-time defending champ was dripping in jewelry to make up for it.

She donned a huge diamond ring on her right hand, a matching bracelet on the other wrist and a pendant necklace that had to hurt her chest as she went running from side to side chasing balls.

And she topped it all off with a pair of heavy-looking earrings swinging from side to side as she moved.

You might guess they slowed her down in her Round of 16 match to Marion Bartoli, but she's been rockin' the ice for a while now, so it was probably more due to the her lack of fitness after being out for almost a year.

Caroline Wozniacki Looks Pretty, but Tennis Disappoints

World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki has still not won a Grand Slam and has not made it to the final of a Grand Slam in the 2009 US Open.

Her outfit at Wimbledon was maybe too much for someone who's never won.

Ruffles lined the racer-back top, and there were mesh strips down the sides of her torso.

Not bad, just maybe you wanna stick to the basics until you win your first title.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands Tries Again, and Fails

3 of 6

Bethanie Mattek-Sands said her Wimbledon outfit this year was inspired by Lady Gaga. There is nothing OK with that.

The knee-socks only made that ridiculous, bomber-esque, fringed, white tennis ball-covered jacket look worse, but at least she didn't wear that for long.

The outfit she actually played in was one-sleeved and form fit, and it was just all bad.

She topped it off with an American sports touch with the eye-blacks under her eyes to deflect glare. They were very sculpted eye-blacks however, unlike football players who just slap some stuff on there and call it a day.

Needless to say, Mattek-Sands didn't make it out of the first round.

Tsvetana Pironkova's Super Short Skirt Gets the Job Done

4 of 6

Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria took down five-time champion Venus Williams in the Round of 16 Monday, and she did it in a very short skirt.

The uber-mini looked cute with a ruffle trim at the bottom, but how did she manage to run across the court and hold tennis balls in that skirt? And God forbid there's a gust of wind.

It's suited her well so far, but how long will her skirt carry her through Wimbledon?

Venus Williams Keeps Up With the Times

5 of 6

Venus Williams is the one who started the recent fashion craze in women's tennis, so naturally, she's ahead of everybody else.

But just so we're clear, ahead doesn't mean better. Venus' outfit at Wimbledon this year was probably her least popular in the all whites and ranks up there in her least popular overall.

She decided to go with a jumper because, "Jumpers are very now." Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's right Venus.

She's always been a fan of lace, so it's no surprise she incorporated it here, but it was the loose top and break-away sleeves that had most people talking.

I do like the gold trim she added, however.

Venus naturally accessorized with a thin gold belt and a blingin' rock on her finger, but she didn't have as much jewelry as Serena.

Duchess of Cambridge Dons Her All Whites

Prince William and Duchess Catherine made a surprise appearance at Wimbledon Monday to watch Andy Murray on Centre Court, and the Duchess, as always, looked lovely.

Nothing outrageous here, but seeing as she's one of the biggest fashion icons in the world today, she had to get a mention.

She wore a white, layered dress with embroidered straps (which weren't my cup of tea, but they weren't bad) and was clearly enjoying herself.

She joined in on the wave while watching Rafael Nadal and chatted with Billie Jean King between points.

The Duchess will probably be the best dressed at Wimbledon this year, until her sister Pippa shows up that is.
