Wimbledon 2011: Novak Djokovic Victorious in Four Sets over Marcos Baghdatis

Grant PakhtigianJun 27, 2011

With the match up between Novak Djokovic and Marcos Baghdatis we get to see some of the most brilliant, charismatic and clean hitters of the ball in tennis today.

Novak, with his hitting style and positioning, creates opportunities with accuracy and anticipation. And Djokovic's foot speed allows for reaching shots that some cannot get to.

With few lapses in concentration and at 24 years old, Novak displays the wisdom of many much older than he.

With Baghdatis' serve, he reaches for the sky to the apex of the ball, and thwacking the strings rains down an ace and winners to the body of Djokovic.

With Novak's exceptional timing and consistency he hits the ball on the rise, taking time away from his opponent.

Confidence may have been evident in the Bagdahtis net approach. There was a little hesitancy which Djokovic picked up on, as Marcos' body language was unsure.

Winning tennis can hinge on your confidence level like any sport. What's between the ears must work in conjunction with what the body does, or there is a disconnect.

With .66 percent on first serves in, Novak's total was 80/122 on the day. On the other hand, Baghdatis served at .53 percent and was 70/132 for the match.

Plenty of aces were handed out, with ten going to the Serbian and 14 to the Cypriot. Both players had four double faults.

Ultimately, what you may find out by reading a bit on tennis is that Pro's build there career on consistency. Rarely do you see a Pro serve under .50 percent. And rarely do they serve under 100 mph.

Bagdhatis was a little inconsistent today, but made up for it by hitting two more winners than Djokovic, 40 to 38. The break point conversion for the two showed some inconsistencies.

With only .20 percent of breaks converted, Marcos was 1/5. On the other side of the coin, we see Novak's conversion rate at .27 percent, or 3/11.

The numbers show that Baghdatis approached the net .64 percent of the time, or 14/22. If we have learned one thing, we know that the Cypriot felt a little unsure at the net.

Djokovic in turn had .54 percent or 14/26 on net approaches.

In conclusion, with this four set win, Djokovic (6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4) can begin to make a connection with his finely tuned all around game based on speed, quickness, anticipation and endurance.

Although Marcos is coming off some injuries of late, he was able to draw out the sets to four in this challenging match at Wimbledon 2011. He had opportunities, as did Djokovic.

However, this day showed clear for Novak, and all summer has been brilliant for the Serb.
