Is the Philadelphia Phillies Roy Halladay the Major Leagues Best Pitcher?

Shay GravesJun 27, 2011

Bullpen? Forget about it, Roy Halladay won Sunday's game against the Oakland Athletics in a complete game. The final score was 3-1, as the Phillies won the three-game series 2-1.

Halladay now has five complete games this season, and 63 for his career.

With his record now at 10-3, is Halladay the best pitcher in the majors?

His National League 10-win counterpart, Jair Jurrjens, has a low number of strikeouts (55) compared to the other 10-game winners, who all have at least 90, and Jurrjens is not even in the top 50 in innings pitched.

Justin Verlander and C.C. Sabathia are the only other pitchers with 10 wins. Sabathia has performed the way everyone expects. He has a 3.25 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 122 innings pitched, but has just one complete game.

The discussion may come down to two men—Verlander and Halladay who have almost identical statistics. Verlander has 124 strikeouts, one more than Halladay, but has one less complete game. They are one and two in innings pitched with 128.2 and 127.1 respectively. Verlander has an ERA of 2.38 compared to the Doc's 2.40 and both have given up 34 earned runs in 17 appearances.

The defining statistics may come down to Verlander giving up 11 homers and 27 walks to Halladay's seven home runs and 16 walks.

But not so fast, the Los Angeles Angels have had a bright spot this season and that is Jared Weaver. He may not be in the 10 win club yet, but he is 9-4 with a 1.97 ERA, 123.1 innings pitched (third in majors), 106 strikeouts and has three complete games while giving up just 27 earned runs on a team that is four games out of last place in their division.

At this point it may be too early in the season to judge who the best pitcher in the majors is. Put all these names in a hat and pick one, there is no bad draw with these aces.

One thing is for certain, all these names will be discussed for league Cy Young's at the season's conclusion.
