Pittsburgh Steelers: Ben Roethlisberger May Need Surgery

Cian FaheyJun 25, 2011

Ben Roethlisberger's broken foot from last season may not have hampered the team so much that it prevented them from reaching the Super Bowl, but it appears to be causing Roethlisberger enough pain still to make him consider surgery.

"

"I could have had surgery, but according to the doctors it would have been a really nasty process because of where the break was. It was better off trying not to do anything. It's going to be something where we're just going to have to, in essence, play it by ear. If it continues to be as painful as it was at the end of last year, then I'm going to probably have to have the surgery."

Roethlisberger did point out that it had been doing well recently but also cited the fact that it wasn't being tested in the way it would during the season.

The quarterback played through the injury, sustained against the Buffalo Bills last November, without missing a game. He appeared unaffected after the game against the Baltimore Ravens when the team took special precautions with his injury.

Roethlisberger's toughness will never be in question, but every football fan knows the importance of a passer's footwork when playing at the NFL level.

This team has already shown that it could go through stretches without the two time Super Bowl champion however it won't want to and couldn't afford to lose him for too long.
