Young Completes United Move; Falcao and Forlan Set for England Switch
Ashley Young has completed his long speculated move to Manchester United after passing a medical at Old Trafford. Manchester United have apparently paid £16 million fee for the winger, which could rise to £20 million depending on performances.
It is actually a brilliant deal for United given that they have paid the same amount of transfer fee for Phil Jones, a relatively untested young player. In Young, United will be getting fantastic winger, who is also capable of playing centrally.
No doubt, Alex Ferguson is looking to increase his options in the central midfield following Scholes' retirement.
Ashley Young has previously played in that position, but he would face competition if he is playing out wide. It also represents a brilliant deal for Villa, who bought the player from Watford for £10 million in 2007.
Falcao looks set for a reunion with Andre Villas-Boas after heavy speculation that the new Chelsea manager is looking to make the Colombian his first signing. The news is likely to be devastating for Porto, who have just lost their manager responsible for the four major trophies won last season.
On the other hand, it could make them richer by £26 million, the release clause in Falcao's contract. Porto are not expected to lower their valuation of the player, who scored an astonishing 39 goals last season including the winner against Braga in the Europa League final.
His signing is likely to signal the end for Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka, or Salomon Kalou. However, it is highly unlikely that Drogba would leave given he is still one of the top players at the club.
The exit of both Anelka and Kalou could also mean less competition for Daniel Sturridge, who once again proved his ability to find the back of the net during his time at Bolton last season. The spine of the team has not changed since the days of Mourinho, but it finally looks to be ending. Falcao and Modric could become the spine for the future.
Another player looking set to move to the English Premier League is Diego Forlan. The Uruguayan has been with Atletico Madrid for quite some time now. However, he now looks set to quit La Liga for England.
The Premier League is something not new for Forlan, having already played for Manchester United in a disastrous spell. Now, though, he looks like a different player, and has the likes of Tottenham excited. Many believe Harry Redknapp to be a keen admirer of the Uruguayan, who could also be relatively cheap due to his age.
Currently in the twilight of his career, Forlan could have a couple of years of top-level football left in him. If there is any manager who can get the best out of such a player, then it is Redknapp. Atletico Madrid have revealed that they will be listening to offers for the 32-year-old. He might have failed at Manchester United, but there definitely seems to be no shortage of takers for him.
