Are Maurice Jones-Drew's Words on Twitter a Concern for the Jaguars?

David LevinJun 24, 2011

Should the Jaguars be concerned with Maurice Jones-Drew’s latest comments on Twitter that the NFL needs to be in the Los Angeles market?

Jones-Drew, who is from the Los Angeles area and went to UCLA, was quoted on his twitter account as stating he thought the NFL should have a team in Los Angeles and made overtures that he might want to play there if that happens.

Jones-Drew said that his family travels 2,000 miles across the country to see him play football in Jacksonville and being able to play football in his town is something that he would like to do.

This is not the first time that the fifth-year running back and the second round draft choice in 2006 has been scrutinized for his comments through his social media account. He has also drawn fire for comments made through other football websites and the NFL network.

On Yardbarker.com, he stated that, “Everybody wants to come to L.A. whoever the face of the franchise is; he is going to have a lot of responsibility.”

About playing in his hometown, Jones-Drew was direct in his desire to possibly come back to the place where he grew up.

“To come back home to play in front of my family, so they don’t have to travel 2,000 miles to see me play, that is something I would love as well,” Jones-Drew said.

Jones-Drew was also quick to point out that he loves being in Jacksonville and part of the Jaguars franchise and the likelihood of football in Los Angeles would come as he approached the end of his career.

The question of Jones-Drew Twitter account first came under fire in January when the running back, who was rehabbing an injured knee from surgery which forced him to miss the final two games of the season and may have been a reason for the Jaguars to suffer their second consecutive late-season meltdown, questioned Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler’s injury that forced him to the sideline in the second half of the NFC Championship game.

Jones-Drew said Cutler, who did not appear injured at the time, should have played in the second half because of the importance of the game and the need for the Bears, who were trying to reach the Super Bowl for the first time since 2006, needed their leader on the field.

According to ESPNChicago.com, Jones-Drew said he would not apologize for his comments about Cutler and the situation, stating that Cutler “gets it.”

Jones-Drew said he was rooting for Cutler and the Bears, and when Cutler left in the third quarter, Jones-Drew thought it was a good time to make fun of the Florida Gators, whose coach resigned after the season.

“Hey I think the Urban Meyer rule is effect right now... When the going gets tough........QUIT," Jones-Drew posted on his Twitter page.

Jones-Drew has also been critical of the Jaguars trading up to the 10th pick in the draft to select Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert when the he thought the franchise should concentrate on other areas of the team moving forward for the current year, not the future.

In an article in the Florida Times-Union, Jones-Drew said his comments were taken out of context regarding the draft and Gabbert himself. The fact that the story stated he was “upset” was not accurate and that he was more “shocked” than anything.

"I said that from the jump. Now it's kind of like all these things are coming up. ... [It's] people taking everything out of context, trying to stir up some controversy. I guess that's what they're supposed to do. I know on this show we just tell it how it is," Jones-Drew explained on his talk show on SiriusXM.
