NBA Draft 2011: Contract and Medical Issues Clouding Bismack Biyombo's NBA Stock

Zachary D. RymerJun 23, 2011

Bismack Biyombo Quickly Becoming One of 2011 NBA Draft's Riskier Picks

In a draft full of uncertainty, Bismack Biyombo fairly stands out. A native of the Congo, Biyombo is a muscular 6'9" power forward who projects as a formidable rebounder and shot-blocker in the spirit of Ben Wallace.

Depending on who you ask, Biyombo could go as high as No. 5 to the Toronto Raptors. One way or another, the odds of him slipping out of the top 10 are slim.

Given the latest developments, however, Biyombo could very well be in for a tumble in tonight's draft.

According to a report from HOOPSWORLD's Alex Kennedy, concerns have arisen about the health of Biyombo's back. Kennedy says that Biyombo has been "flagged" for an unspecified back issue, and that it has some teams worried.

Still, Kennedy thinks Biyombo's back alone won't push him down all that far, as he still has him going in the top 10.

Biyombo's contract just might, though. Earlier on Thursday, ESPN's Andy Katz reported that Biyombo's name was on a list that was sent out by the NBA on Wednesday detailing players who are subject to a buyout. In order for Biyombo to get out of his contract with Fuenlabrada, his team in Spain, he would owe the team roughly $1.5 million.

This is a supposedly a negotiable figure, but Katz's sources say that the matter could just as easily end up in court.

Under the league's collective bargaining agreement, the team that drafts Biyombo will only be able to contribute $500,000 to his buyout. This is the same CBA, by the way, that is due to expire on June 30.

Put it all together, and you get a situation that is complicated enough to convince teams that they're better off passing on Biyombo.
