Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Arsene Wenger Considering Everton's Phil Jagielka

James DudkoJun 22, 2011

The Daily Mail reports that Arsene Wenger is contemplating a move for Everton and England central defender Phil Jagielka.  The report claims that Wenger could be set to renew his interest in Jagielka after being rebuffed last summer.

Many central defensive targets have been linked with the Gunners in recent weeks, and Jagielka is a worthy addition to the list of options.  The Everton center back is a strong, combative and shrewd defender.

While not the tallest or fastest player, Jagielka relies on excellent positioning and above average instincts to be a steadfast presence in the middle of defense.

The England international's football smarts and concentration mean that he is guilty of few errors across the back four.  Despite his lack of height, Jagielka's deceptive spring and tenacious appetite for attacking the ball make him commanding aerially.

These same attributes also allow the Toffees defender to offer a potent threat in the opposition box from set pieces.  Having spent time as a defensive midfielder, Jagielka possesses decent technique and is comfortable playing out from the back.

A sticking point in any potential deal would be Everton's reluctance to sell unless they receive a significant offer.  In spite of the club's mounting debts, Everton manager David Moyes has often blanched at the idea of having to sell his star players cheaply.

With Arsenal alleged to have had a £15 million offer rejected last year, Arsene Wenger would have to ensure the club is not held to ransom for a player who will turn 29 in August.

Arsenal would also likely need favourable reports regarding Jagielka's durability and fitness.  The ex-Sheffield United player suffered a substantial knee ligament injury in April 2009.  Although, Jagielka did make a positive comeback last season.

A composed and intelligent defender, Jagielka would bring solidity and assurance to the Gunners back four.  If Arsenal could encourage Everton to settle for a fee in the region of £10 million, Jagielka would be an ideal signing.
