Liverpool FC Transfer Rumors: Is Blackpool's Charlie Adam Really Needed?

Kumar CheruvuJun 20, 2011

Over the last six months or so, the charismatic Tangerine midfielder Charlie Adam has been heavily linked to Liverpool FC.  Now that the Premier League campaign has come to an end and Blackpool have been relegated, this transfer has become much more feasible and the seasiders have lost a lot of bargaining power.

With several other clubs potentially linked with the playmaker—Manchester United, Aston Villa and Tottenham—the price for Adam can only go up and this begs the question: Do Liverpool really need Charlie Adam?

With the signing of Jordan Henderson from Sunderland and the abundance of center midfielders at Kenny Dalglish's disposal, it seems that the role Charlie Adam could possibly be marginalized.

There is no questioning the talent this man has, he has a wicked left-foot and is always a danger with set pieces. His vision rivals some of the best central midfielders in the Premier League, but is he a talent that will fill a necessary role in Dalglish's new Liverpool squad?

If viewed from a practical perspective, Adam doesn't really fit in to the Reds' current set-up.  Lucas is coming off of a spectacular campaign, earning him a new deal and almost certainly making him a regular for next season.  The attacking midfield roles will have to be given to Steven Gerrard and Raul Meireles (if Meireles stays) and if not Meireles, this role is equally suited to Henderson and possibly Jonjo Shelvey.

Adding to this depth in midfield will be the return of Alberto Aquilani—who is an accomplished playmaker in his own right—from his loan spell at Juventus.  Since Adam does not fit the bill for a wide player, the position of greatest need for Liverpool this coming season, it seems that Adam would not serve a unique purpose or role in this squad.

This is not to say that Charlie Adam would not or could not make the starting 11 but there is no point in spending money on a position that is plentiful for Liverpool, especially with the amount of clubs competing for the Scot's signature.

This money could be better spent in addressing one of the Reds' areas of concern: fullback, wide men or adding depth at centerback.
