Wilmbledon 2011: Andy Roddick and 3 Upset Candidates

Ishan ChowdhuryJun 19, 2011

With Wimbledon only a few days away now, let's take a look at some of the players who could really challenge for the most prestigious of the Grand Slams.

I will not be considering the top 4 players, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray.

Let me know your views regarding the chances of these players!

Andy Roddick

Grass is the American's favorite surface, and he could prove to be a thorn for any of the pre-tournament favorites.

He ran Federer really close in the record-breaking Wimbledon final in 2009, and although he has not done anything much of notice after that, I feel that the gutsy American has it in him to "serve" his way to a much awaited Grand Slam title.

I believe that he has more to his game than he did upon entering the arena for the first time, and though he can't be a regular top-three player, I believe that he has it in himself to score some major upsets in the tournament.

Jo-Wilfred Tsonga

Tsonga showed a lot of promise when he appeared on the scene—it seemed like the powerful French player could muscle his way to some major Grand Slams.

However, he has been inconsistent throughout his career.

He recently defeated Rafael Nadal on the ATP circuit, which could be a sign of things to come, given his power-packed game.

He has as strong a forehand as anyone in the game and should look to kill points early. Grass courts could prove to be the perfect foil for a player of his style.

Although he might require some luck in the tournament as far as fixtures are concerned, I believe that if he reaches the semifinals, he has it in him to go all the way, no matter who the opponent may be.

Juan Del-Potro

The tall Argentinian could prove to be a great prospect in this year's Wimbledon. He has everything—a solid game, a good serve, strength, and stamina.

The one thing he possibly doesn't have is composure. If he could only get that aspect of his game right and fully focus on the matter at hand, he could prove to be a major obstacle for any player to get past.

Although he has not been picked by many to make much of an impact in this year's tournament, I believe that with some luck he could really dent the chances of some of the favorites.

The best Croatian player on the circuit could be the surprise element of this year's Wimbledon as he will look to beat his opponents by playing on the baseline and occasionally coming up for volleys.

He has improved remarkably over the past few years and has been called—by leading stars like Nadal and Federer—an opponent that can cause even the best a few problems.

He should look to play to his strength and hence maintain a baseline game against most of his opponents.
