The current standings look like this: Auburn leads, followed by Stanford, Connecticut, Eastern Washington, Virginia, Florida, Texas A&M and California.

The standings of what you might ask? Those are the current top eight teams in the race to win the Capital One Cup.

For the uninitiated, the Capital One Cup is a comprehensive measure of a university's athletic department from top to bottom.

13 sports in both men's and women's athletics factor into the final total. Points are awarded based on a school's final finish in the given sport.

The sports are grouped together based on factors like fan interest and school participation. For instance, a top finish in football will be weighted differently than a top finish in track and field.

The top scoring school for both men and women will receive $200,000 to help fund graduate level scholarships for student-athletes.

Ex-major league player and Oklahoma State Cowboy Robin Ventura has partnered with Capital One to help promote the competition. Ventura said that it was easy for him to get involved in something like this as he is a self-described huge "fan of college athletics."

Ventura mentioned that he finds it exciting that the competition involves so many different sports and that the winner might come from a school "that isn't just good at football, basketball and baseball."

As a former college baseball player, Ventura voiced his excitement over the fact that four of the top eight teams in the Capital One Cup standings are competing in the College World Series, which begins play this weekend.

The winner of the College World Series very well could end up as the winner of the Capital One Cup. "At the beginning of the year, there was hope that this is the way it was going to happen," Ventura said.

The respective winners of the Capital One Cup will be announced at the ESPY Awards later this summer. For more information on the Capital One Cup, visit capitalonecup.com.
