Is Brock Lesnar Really The Next Big Thing In UFC?

Joe Burgett Oct 26, 2008

As normally I am a wrestling writer, it is weird for me, but I have really gotten into MMA over the past year, and grown a huge respect for it and its fighters, even though Elite XC went under and Mr. Over-hyped Kimbo Slice went along with it, I still have enjoyed as many MMA fans have, UFC.

It never lets me or many UFC fans down, until I heard that Brock Lesnar had gotten a title shot with Randy Couture for Couture's UFC Heavyweight Championship. Now Brock will tell anyone who thinks he doesn't deserve it to get over it, as he did in an ESPN interview with E:60.

We all know he thinks he deserves the shot, even though its only his third fight in UFC. And sure he beat some great group of guys, but none compare to Couture. Although I have seen Brock in action in both the UFC and WWE ring, I don't think he is the next big thing in MMA or UFC in general.

Its not that I am hating on Lesnar, he is strong and can knock you out with one punch. But really that is all he is, just a big punch guy. He is an NCAA Champion wrestler, yet he doesn't do well on the ground for what I am seeing.

He should be much better than he is, but like many hyped guys before him, he hasn't lived up to expectations. I like Lesnar as a wrestler. When he was in the WWE, everyone loved him; he became an overnight success in his debut.

Once he went to the MMA ring instead of the wrestling ring, everyone including myself, was surprised. Sure we had seen him in a wrestling ring, and although a very dangerous sport, pro-wrestling doesn't match MMA.

He did well in his first three fights, but is 1-1 in UFC, and many are thinking that he is undeserving on a championship fight. Dana White, President of the UFC, thinks Brock Lesnar is a very good fighter, and he talks about some ways that he could become great.

But what White has failed to mention was what he is doing well now. the only thing Lesnar is doing well now in, is getting people in seats. He is very popular, which is the reason for him getting the fight with Couture.

I don't like his chances, although he is much younger than Couture, Lesnar lacks one thing Couture has, skill and experience. He has that powerful punch, but that is really all he is known for currently in UFC.

He can't be the next big thing in the UFC to me. In the WWE where he got his catch fraise, "Here comes the Pain" and " The Next Big Thing" he was the next big thing. But in wrestling, and trust me on this, it depends on popularity to get Championships.

In MMA popularity will get you nowhere Lesnar, it takes more than that, it takes skill and experience, something you currently do not have. Sure you can punch a guy's light out in the wrestling ring when he is expecting it, but can you do it when someone ducks and isn't waiting for it?

I don't think so. "Here Comes The Pain?" More like, "There Goes Brock."

Of course this is all my opinion, but what do you think? Is Brock Lesnar The Next Big Thing in UFC?
