Best and Worst of The Past Week

Josh SawyerOct 25, 2008

Every week, i will pick what i think have been the best and worst sports story's. This is the first of many Saturday reports. Here they are.

Worst of the past week:

1. Isiah Thomas and police differ. Authorities were called early Friday to Isiah Thomas' home. As reported, An ambulance and two police officers responded to a 911 call that came from Isiah Thomas home a couple minutes after midnight, Hall said. The victim was taken from his house, 5 miles away to White Plains Hospital Center, where officials would not answer to the question if the patient was Thomas or not. Thomas was reached on his cell phone sometime friday and was asked if it was him. Thomas responded and said it that it was his 17 year old daughter, that has been having a rough time, and it was her that was transported to the hospital. The Harrison Police chief, David Hall said "My cops ... know the difference between a 47-year-old black male and a young black female," and he also said "Why they're throwing her under the bus is beyond my ability to understand."

2. Larry Johnson; The six year player was suspended from the Kansas City Chiefs for spitting in a woman's face. Johnson was reported to have asked the woman if he could buy her a drink, she said no, and in retaliation he spit in her face. The owner of the bar eventually asked Johnson to leave. For his actions, the Kansas City Chiefs Suspended the player.

3. Tom Brady; In the first week of this NFL season, Brady tore his anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligaments. He had surgery to repair his knee earlier this month. As reported by the Boston Herald "Brady has been dealing with a "septic joint" since he had the surgery in his left knee." In the past seven days, the knee was washed out multiple times, according to NFL sources, who cite this treatment as a "typical" way to clear out an infection. When doctors wash out a septic joint, the action must be done two or three times to help clear out the infection. Patriots offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniel's is confident Brady will return for the beginning of the 2009 season.

4. Failed Doping Test; Sources in the NFL have reported to Chris Mortensen of ESPN that eight players are in the process of being suspended. Sources have also confirmed that four of the eight have tested positive for the diuretic Bumetanide, which belongs to a   medicine known as water pills that gives the users an ability to lose weight fast, but four of the eight players are yet to be named. Three of the four players that have been named are from the New Orleans Saints, they are running back Deuce McAllister and defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant. Houston Texans long snapper Bryan Pittman was the fourth player that was named.

5. Peyton Manning; Friday, the team confirmed, A staph infection in Peyton Mannings bursa sac in left knee led to the surgery that kept him out of much of the Indianapolis Colts preseason training camp. But team officials are denying Manning had a serious type of staph infection that is difficult to treat called methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus. Signs of the infection appeared in July when Manning was in New Orleans, prompting surgery to remove the bursa sac and Manning had treatment with antibiotics to eliminate the infection.

Best of the past week:

1. Milan Lucic Hat Trick; During the Boston Bruins game Saturday night, Bruins LW player Milan Lucic gets a hat trick. He had 3 goals and an assist in the Bruins 5-4 win against the Atlanta Thrashers.

2. World Series Starts; The Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays started Wednesday. Noone expected these 2 teams to be in this spot. This is the first year in 15 years either team has been in the World Series.

3. Rays in World Series; The chance of the Tampa Bay Rays going to the World Series was very slim. Most of the experts didn't expect this team to win any more than 70 games this year, yet alone make the playoffs. They won almost 30 more games then expected. This is the first year, in its 11 years as a MLB team, it has been in playoffs.

4. Nascar; With Ryan Newman's win in the Truck Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday, October 25th, he became the 19th driver to win at least one race in the Sprint Cup Series, Nationwide Series and Craftsman Truck Series race. Newman has won 13 Chase for the Sprint Cup races, 7 Nationwide Series races and 1 Craftsman Truck Series race for a total of 21 in the top three national series.

5. Breeders Cup; "Raven's Pass completed a banner day for the Europeans when rallying down the center of the track to a 1 3/4-length victory over fellow European Henrythenavigator in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, the highlight of Saturday's nine-race Breeders' Cup program at Santa Anita. Tiago rallied belatedly to finish third.Defending champion and reigning Horse of the Year Curlin made the lead in early stretch of the 1 1/4-mile Classic but faltered late over the synthetic Pro-Ride racetrack, finishing a disappointing fourth as the 4-5 favorite in a field of 12. Raven's Pass set a new course record in the Classic after covering the distance in 1:59.22. The 3-year-old son of Elusive Quality gave trainer John Gosden and jockey Frankie Dettori their second wins on the card. The team combined earlier in the day to capture the Juvenile Turf with Donativum. Raven's Pass paid $29 to win and combined with Henrythenavigator for a $2 exacta worth $319.
