Is It Just Me, or Has the SEC Not Looked Like Itself Lately?

Joe Burgett Oct 25, 2008

While watching the past few years, with the SEC winning the last two National Championships, I have known that they are the best conference. They always have three or four teams in the top 10 every year, which is great, but they of course do go down, once they all pick each other off.

And the ones you think will be the best teams usually win. As you have seen the past two years, you know that they come out of the SEC and head over to the National Title game.

And I think that is cool, but this year, it has been another story entirely. Sure you have the Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 2 in the nation, but that is pretty much it.

The Auburn Tigers have sucked; LSU has gotten worse; Kentucky has improved but is still not up to standard. And Florida loses to Ole Miss who could have won every game, and only has lost by four points or less in every game that they have lost.

Georgia looks OK, but not like the No. 1 team they were at the start of the season—a season in which they were picked by some to be the National Champions at the end of the year.

Tennessee has lost way too much and is looking worse than ever at the program. South Carolina has not played up to their standard for a while, but this season looks particularly smelly—sorry Gamecock fans, but its true.

Of course there have been surprises like The Vanderbilt Commodores doing very well, and of course, as I mentioned, the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The SEC has always been the best conference in my memory, but with many of the SEC's best doing badly, does the SEC have to give up the title of best conference to, let's say, the Big 12 this year?

The Big 12: the conference in which every quarterback is a superstar. You have Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, OK State, Kansas, and others who are looking very good right now, and have surprised everyone.

We have seen Colt McCoy lead a Texas Longhorn team to the No. 1 spot in the BCS poll, we have seen Chase Daniel play well, Bradford and every QB in the Big 12 play up to SEC level, which is great for them.

I have always thought that the Big 12 was always No. 2 to the SEC myself, but I never thought they could catch up to them. But now, with all the teams in the Big 12 doing so well, and many SEC favorites doing so poorly, we have to give that best conference title to the Big 12, don't we?

You be the judge. Tell me what you think: should we consider the Big 12 better than the SEC this year?
